WSOC: Panthers earn point at ECSU to keep playoffs hope alive

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Plymouth State University women's soccer team tied the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors, 0-0, to earn a crucial point in a Little East Conference (LEC) match on Rick McCarthy Field Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers outplayed their LEC counterpart start to finish, earning themselves a point to give the team a chance to make the LEC Tournament with one league game left to play. Sophomore Molly Bellmore (Hebron, Conn.) led the team with two shots on goal, while junior defender Erin Cammarota (Goffstown, N.H.) got in on the attack with two shots on goal of her own.

Plymouth State will have two weeks to prepare for its final LEC match on Oct. 27 at home against UMass Dartmouth.

Freshman goalkeeper Drea Oswell (Stafford Springs, Conn.) made the only save needed to keep the Warriors off the board in her first collegiate shutout.

Plymouth State is now 3-7-3 (1-5-1 LEC), as Eastern Connecticut goes to 4-5-2 (1-3-2 LEC) on the season.

The Basics:

  • The Panthers took the first half momentum into the second half, forcing multiple saves from the opposing goalkeeper and earning seven additional corner kicks.
  • Cammarota almost put the Panthers ahead in the 83rd minute, but the Warriors' goalkeeper was up to the task.
  • One last gasp with 30 seconds to play found the Panthers with numbers forward and their final scoring opportunity: the team's tenth corner kick.  PSU was unable to finish the dangerous ball into the box as the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

  • The tie was the first recorded on the road in 23 head-to-head matches dating back to 1987.
