VB: Stogner rallies Panthers past Salve Regina, Westfield St.

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Lilli Stogner (Weare, N.H.) slammed a match-high 17 kills and hit a sparkling .455 as Plymouth State University rallied past Salve Regina University, 3-2 (19-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-12, 15-8) as part of a non-conference tri-match at Foley Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers blew past Westfield State University, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-14), in the opener, with Salve Regina dispatching of the Owls, 3-0, in the day's middle match.

After falling behind 2-1 in three competitive sets, the Panthers kicked it into a new gear in a lopsided fourth set. PSU hit .312 in the fourth set, with a 92% sideout percentage, to force a fifth set. PSU rode the momentum, turning a narrow 4-3 lead into a comfortable 11-3 margin on Stogner's ace. The Seahawks made a late attempt at a rally to pull within 13-8, but freshman Emma Hampton (Durham, N.H.) slammed a kill and a Salve Regina error closed out the set.

Stogner pounded a team-high nine kills in the sweep of Westfield State, while senior Aynslee King (Anacortes, Wash.) posted five kills without an error (.455 attack pct.). The Panthers' tough serving kept Westfield State out of system, limiting the visitor's attack to a .043 hitting percentage.

Plymouth State moves to 20-3, while Westfield State goes to 8-17. The Seahawks finish the day at 11-14.

The Basics:

  • Plymouth State 3, Salve Regina 2
    • Plymouth State (20-3)
    • Westfield State (8-17)
    • Salve Regina (11-14)
How it Happened (Westfield State):
  • Plymouth State got out to a quick start as sophomore Kalista Butler (Philipsburg, Pa.) served the Panthers to a 5-1 lead. Westfield State chipped away to trim the deficit to one on multiple occasions, but PSU never surrendered the lead. The Panthers held a slim 20-19 advantage, but King's kill gave the ball back to PSU and Hampton served out the final four points for a 25-19 win.
  • The Owls raced out to a 7-1 lead in set two to force a quick timeout. Plymouth State battled back and a block by King and junior Lindsey Sanderson (Gilford, N.H.) tied things at 11-apiece. King and Stogner followed with another block to give PSU the lead and the Panthers would stay in front the rest of the way. Westfield State trimmed the deficit to 19-17 with a kill, but senior Ryley McNeeley (Easton, Mass.) answered with a kill of her own and sophomore Riley McDonough (Gilford, N.H.) pushed the margin to 23-17 with a run of strong serves before Sanderson's kill closed out the 25-18 win.
  • Junior Makayla Marucci (Newton, Mass.) opened set three with one of her patented service runs as the Panthers scored the first ten points of the set. The lead ballooned to 19-3 on an Owls' error, but the visitors attempted to make a late comeback. Westfield State used a 10-2 surge to pull within 23-14, but Ryan slammed a kill and McNeeley split the block to complete the sweep, 25-14.

How it Happened (Salve Regina):
  • Salve Regina came out strong to build a six-point advantage and the Seahawks were able to keep Plymouth State at bay. Ryan's kill and a Seahawks' error pulled PSU to within 14-12, but that was as close as the Panthers would get as the visitors took set one, 25-19.
  • The second set was the most competitive of the afternoon, featuring 14 ties and six lead changes. A Seahawks' ace gave Salve Regina a 20-17 edge and forced a PSU timeout, but the Panthers rallied out of the break. Stogner slammed back-to-back kills to cut the deficit to 21-20, and McNeeley and Ryan teamed up for a huge block to tie the score at 22-all. Butler followed with an ace, though Salve Regina tied the score at 23-23. A missed serve gave PSU set-point, and Stogner followed with an ace for the 25-23 win.
  • The Seahawks snagged an early lead, pulling ahead 11-5, but Plymouth State chipped away. Ryan and Stogner landed huge kills to help trim the deficit to 16-14, and Marucci notched an ace during a 3-0 spurt to tie the score at 21-21. Salve Regina scored four of the final five points, though, to take the 2-1 lead, 25-22.
  • Stogner's emphatic kill kicked off a huge start for the Panthers in set four as the momentum shifted. Butler served PSU to an 8-1 lead and Plymouth State never looked back. Ryan's kill gave the hosts an 18-7 advantage as Salve Regina burned its final timeout. With no way to slow the momentum, PSU extended the match with a decisive 25-12 win.
  • The teams traded points early in the fifth set, with a Salve Regina service error giving PSU a narrow 4-3 edge. Stogner's tough serving kept the Seahawks off balance and Hampton and McNeeley slammed back-to-back kills as PSU led 8-3 at the switch. Stogner added a service ace during the run, forcing the Seahawks to use both timeouts, as the lead grew to 11-3. Plymouth State coasted from there, holding off a late Salve Regina charge for the 15-8 victory.
