Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Assistant Athletics Director, Athletics Communications

VB: Ryan powers Panthers over NEC

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Nora Ryan (Groton, Conn.) stuffed the stat sheet with nine kills, seven aces and four blocks as Plymouth State University powered past New England College, 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-12), in non-conference women's volleyball action at Foley Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

Ryan did damage from the service line to help build a five-point lead in the early stages of set one, and sophomore Kalista Butler (Philipsburg, Pa.) ripped back-to-back aces as the margin grew to 17-11, before PSU coasted from there.

The Panthers scored in bunches in set two, with junior Lindsey Sanderson (Gilford, N.H.) hammering home a kill for a 15-7 lead. NEC cut the deficit to four (18-14), but PSU closed out the set with a 7-1 win to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

PSU pounded the NEC defense with a .346 attack percentage in the final set, racing out to a 9-1 lead behind strong serving from junior Makayla Marucci (Newton, Mass.) and Butler. Plymouth State maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way to complete the sweep.

Plymouth State jumps to 21-3, while the Pilgrims slide to 12-15.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, NEC 0
    • Plymouth State (21-3)
    • NEC (12-15)
How it Happened:
  • An NEC kill tied the opening set at 5-5, but PSU got the ball right back and Ryan fired off a pair of aces during a 5-0 spurt as Plymouth State took the lead for good. The Pilgrims were able to get as close as 15-11, but Butler notched consecutive aces and Plymouth State controlled the set the rest of the way with an NEC error closing out a 25-14 win.
  • Ryan smoked a pair of aces for a quick 10-3 lead in set two, forcing NEC to burn both of its timeouts. PSU maintained a minimum four-point edge the rest of the way, with senior Aynslee King (Anacortes, Wash.) slamming back-to-back kills to make it 14-7. The Pilgrims pulled to within 18-14, but junior Morgan Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine) ended any thoughts of a comeback with a big kill and Ryan's tough serving put the game out of reach. King and Sanderson wrapped up the 25-15 victory with a thunderous block.
  • Junior Lilli Stogner (Weare, N.H.) banged home a kill and Butler followed with a long service run for a 9-1 advantage. Plymouth State didn't let up, increasing the margin to double digits as PSU coasted to a 25-12 win.
