WTEN: Reigning champs stifle Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Junior Amelia Brown (Meredith, N.H.) and senior Camilla Puzio (Holden, Mass.) put up strong fights, but the University of Massachusetts Boston extended its march toward a repeat Little East Conference (LEC) title with a 9-0 victory over Plymouth State University in women's tennis action at the Holderness School Courts on Thursday.
 
Puzio put up a valiant effort at No. 5 singles, while Brown competed at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, though the Beacons were able to take all nine spots to remain unbeaten in the LEC.
 
Plymouth State goes to 4-4 (2-3 LEC), while UMass Boston stands at 6-1 and 5-0 in the LEC.
  
The Basics:

How it Happened:
  • Brown and senior Sarah Asciutto (Manchester Center, Vt.) teamed up at No. 3 doubles and gave the Panthers the best opportunity to steal an early point, though the Beacons were able to hold on for an 8-4 win.
  • Sophomore Alyssa Craigie (Gilford, N.H.) and junior Elena Cardoso (Hudson, Mass.) dropped an 8-1 decision at No. 1 pairs, while Puzio and junior Tessa LaBarre (North Smithfield, R.I.) fell by the same score at No. 2.
  • Puzio put up the biggest challenge in singles play as one of two players to take games in both sets, before ultimately falling 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5.
  • Brown also put up a fight at No. 6 but went down by a 6-2, 6-4 margin.
  • LaBarre, Craigie and Cardoso were each bested by a 6-0, 6-1 score at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
  • Asciutto took a game in her opening set, but dropped a 6-6, 6-0 decision at No. 4 to round out the scoring.
By the Numbers:
  • Brown leads the team with a 4-1 singles mark, while Puzio has a team-best five singles wins.
  • The setback was the first for the pairings of LaBarre-Puzio and Brown-Ascuitto.
  • Plymouth State combined to win 17 singles games after winning just 11 last year.
  • UMass Boston has swept the last two meetings, though Plymouth State holds a 17-6 edge in the all-time matchup dating back to the 2001 season.
