MH: Fitchburg State rallies to tie Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Anton Jellvik (Taby, Sweden) notched a goal and an assist, but Fitchburg State University rallied with a pair of third period goals to tie Plymouth State University, 3-3, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink on Thursday night.

Jellvik opened the scoring midway through the first, then helped set up a goal from freshman Eddie Mulligan (Lincoln, R.I.) late in the stanza as the Panthers took a 2-0 lead.

Fitchburg State cut the deficit in half with the second period's lone goal, but PSU restored the two-score advantage on a tally from junior Josh Kagan (Winnipeg, Manitoba) eight minutes into the third.

The Falcons rallied, though, scoring twice in a three-plus minute span to even the score at 3-3 and neither team was able to pot the game-winner.

Plymouth State moves to 4-1-2 (2-0-2 MASCAC), while Fitchburg State goes to 3-1-2 (2-0-2 MASCAC).

The Basics:
  • #13 Plymouth State 3, Fitchburg State 3
    • Plymouth State (4-1-2, 2-0-2 MASCAC)
    • Fitchburg State (3-1-2, 2-0-2 MASCAC)
How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State maintained heavy zone pressure in the early going and was finally rewarded at the 7:35 mark. Senior Carson Lanceleve (Stewiacke, Nova Scotia) knocked down a Falcons' clear attempt at center ice and junior Donte' DiPonio (Trenton, Mich.) fired a cross-ice pass to Jellvik, who was all alone on the right side. Jellvik skated to the top of the circle and fired a wrist shot that got under the glove of the Fitchburg State goaltender for a 1-0 lead.
  • The Panthers nearly added a second tally late in the period when sophomore Will Redick (Collingwood, Ontario) stole the puck in the defensive zone and carried up the left wing. He got pinched in on the half wall but was able to flip a pass to sophomore Payton Schaly (Orillia, Ontario), who had snuck behind the defense. Schaly skated in and fired a wrist shot, but the Falcons' goalie was able to deflect it out of play.
  • PSU made it 2-0 with 3:19 left in the stanza when freshman Will Pray (Wheaton, Ill.) skated behind the goal and found Mulligan at the right circle for the one-timer to make it 2-0.
  • Fitchburg State nearly got one back with two minutes left in the period, but a blast from the slot rang the far side post and Plymouth State went into the locker room with a 2-0 lead.
  • The Falcons had an opportunity to build momentum midway through the middle stanza with back-to-back power play chances, but the Plymouth State penalty kill was up to the challenge.
  • Senior Kalle Andersson (Taby, Sweden) made a series of impressive, point-blank saves late in the period, but Fitchburg State cut the margin in half when a soft shot from the blueline was tipped in off the nearside post and just over the goal line with 1:07 on the clock.
  • PSU restored the two-goal advantage midway through the third when Kagan and junior Ethan Stuckless (Conception Bay South, Newfoundland) worked a perfect give-and-go on the left side and Kagan whipped a one-timer wrist shot low to the near side at the 8:07 mark.
  • Fitchburg State struck back just over four minutes later when a shot from just inside the blue line snuck past Andersson's blocker.
  • The visitors rode the momentum to pull even with 4:19 left on the clock when a long pass led to a 2-on-1 breakaway, and the Falcons converted to knot the game at 3-3.
  • PSU had the ice tilted in its favor the entirety of the extra session but was unable to break through as the game ended in a 3-3 tie.
By the Numbers:
  • Jellvik notched his first multi-point game of the year.
  • Mulligan's goal was the first of his career, while Kagan's tally was his first of the season.
  • The Panthers held a decisive 48-27 advantage in shots and outshot the Falcons by a 5-0 margin in the overtime period.
  • Andersson finished with 24 saves.
  • PSU's penalty kill was perfect on the night, denying the Falcons on three power play chances. Fitchburg State was not whistled for a penalty.
  • Plymouth State is unbeaten in the last five meetings between the two teams. The most recent game (Jan. 28, 2023) also went to overtime.
