FALMOUTH, Mass. – Junior
Connor Tait (Boyds, Md.) scored the game-winning goal with 2:18 left to go and sophomore
Will Redick (Collingwood, Ontario) notched a pair of goals as Plymouth State University fended off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 3-1, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey game at Falmouth Ice Arena on Thursday night.
The Corsairs notched the lone goal of the opening frame for an early lead, but Redick got the Panthers even with his tenth of the season early in the second period. The game remained tied late into the third, until Tait went top shelf with 2:18 remaining for a 2-1 lead and Redick would tack on an empty netter in the final minute to account for the final score.
Plymouth State improves to 7-1-2 (5-0-2 MASCAC), while UMass Dartmouth moves to an even 4-4-0 (3-3-0 MASCAC).
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 3, UMass Dartmouth 1
- Plymouth State (7-1-2, 5-0-2 MASCAC)
- UMass Dartmouth (4-4-0, 3-3-0 MASCAC)
How it Happened:
- The two teams played even through most of the opening period.
- UMass Dartmouth took the lead with 5:39 left in the stanza.
- PSU had seven shots during a power play opportunity late in the period but was unable to convert.
- Plymouth State cashed in on its next man-up chance early in the second. Sophomore Rider McCallum (Langley, British Columbia) flicked a quick pass to senior Anton Jellvik (Taby, Sweden) across the blue line and Jellvik found Redick with a cross-ice feed to the bottom of the right circle where Redick's low-angle shot got past the UMD goalie to tie the game 4:08 into the frame.
- PSU took control in the third period, outshooting the Corsairs by a 23-10 margin, but the game remained deadlocked into the late stages of the period.
- Jellvik grabbed a bouncing puck along the boards in the neutral zone and hit Tait in stride at the blue line. Tait, with the puck on the backhand side, held off a defender then cut in front of the goal to the forehand before lifting a wrister to beat the goalie high to the glove side for the 2-1 lead with 2:18 left on the clock.
- Redick added an empty netter for his third multi-goal game of the season to ice the win.
By the Numbers:
- Redick has 11 goals and nine assists in his nine games played. His 11 tallies lead the nation, while his 2.22 points per game are also the best in the country.
- Tait's marker was his fifth of the year.
