FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Five different players scored and senior
Brendahn Brawley (Morton, Pa.) lifted himself to the top of the Panthers' record books as Plymouth State University skated past Framingham State University, 5-0, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey game at Loring Arena on Thursday night.
Brawley stopped all 14 shots he faced to tie the school record with his fourth shutout of the season. With the win he improves to 19-2-1 on the year, establishing a new program-best for goalie wins in a year.
Sophomore
Ethan Stuckless (Conception Bay South, Newfoundland) opened the scoring 8:14 into the first and three minutes later senior
Lukas Holmqvist (Lerum, Sweden) doubled the margin.
Senior
Myles Abbate (Norwell, Mass.) and sophomore
Carson Lanceleve (Stewiacke, Nova Scotia) each scored in the middle period, while junior
Matt Tartaglio (Houston, Texas) capped the scoring with his third-period tally to account for the final score.
The 11th-ranked Panthers improve to 20-3-1, moving just one win shy of the program record established in the 2015-16 season. PSU improves to 17-0-0 in the MASCAC and, with a win in the regular season finale on Saturday, would become the first team to go unbeaten through league play since the MASCAC re-sponsored men's hockey for the 2008-09 season.
Framingham State falls to 5-17-2 and 3-13-2 in league play.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 5, Framingham State 0
- Plymouth State (20-3-1, 17-0-0 MASCAC)
- Framingham State (5-17-2, 3-13-2 MASCAC)
How it Happened:
- The Panthers took a first period lead when Stuckless stole the puck along the boards and worked a give-and-go with Lanceleve. Stuckless was able to slip his shot past the Rams' goaltender to make it 1-0 at the 8:14 mark of the period.
- PSU doubled the margin just over three minutes later. Sophomore Dante Moretti (Powell, Ohio) flipped a pass from behind the goal line to Holmqvist, who was streaking through the slot before converting a one-timer on the weakside to make it 2-0.
- Plymouth State struck again just 1:13 into the second to extend the margin to 3-0. Abbate sent the puck to freshman Will Redick (Collingwood, Ontario) along the boards on the nearside. Redick skated to the goal line, then fired a pass through traffic to Abbate at the far post, who tapped it into the open net.
- Lanceleve pushed the lead to 4-0 with 3:08 left in the period when tipped in a turnaround shot by sophomore Anton Jellvik (Taby, Sweden) from the blue line.
- Tartaglio got into the action 4:28 into the third when he received a long pass through the neutral zone from classmate Colin Tracy (Bow, N.H.) and skated in alone, beating the goaltender high to the stick side.
By the Numbers:
- Lanceleve and Stuckless each finished with a goal and an assist.
- Abbate's goal was his tenth of the season. His 31 points are tied with Lanceleve for the most in the MASCAC, while Stuckless is third with 29.
- Holmqvist's tally was his first of the year.
- Senior Niks Krollis (Riga, Latvia) picked up an assist and is on the brink of giving PSU seven players with 20-plus points on the season.
- PSU outshot the Rams by a 49-14 margin.
- Neither team was successful on the power play. PSU finished 0-for-2, while Framingham State was 0-for-3.
- The Panthers won 38-of-63 faceoffs, with Jellvik winning 12-of-16 and Holmqvist taking 9-of-10.
- Plymouth State has won each of the last 20 meetings and improves to 26-1-1 since the 2013-14 season.
Up Next:
- Plymouth State looks to wrap up a perfect MASCAC season and tie the program record for wins when it travels to Salem State on Saturday (Feb. 18). Puck drop is set for 2:00 p.m.
