20230204 - MH vs UMD

Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Assistant Athletics Director, Athletics Communications

MH: Brawley, Redick blank UMass Dartmouth

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Brendahn Brawley (Morton, Pa.) made 31 saves for his third shutout of the season and freshman Will Redick (Collingwood, Ontario) scored a pair of goals as Plymouth State University roared past the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 6-0, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink on Salute the Troops night Saturday evening.

The opening period went back-and-forth with limited chances for either team. Redick scored twice in the first 1:41 of the second period and Plymouth State never looked back. The Panthers added three special teams goals – two shorthanded tallies and a power play strike – to extend the lead to 5-0 and junior Matt Tartaglio (Houston, Texas) capped the scoring with 1:32 remaining to account for the final score.

The Panthers, ranked 11th in the country, push their program-record win streak to 14 straight games and improve to 18-3-1 overall and 15-0-0 in the MASCAC. PSU has already locked up the top seed for the MASCAC Tournament. UMass Dartmouth falls to 8-12-2 and 6-8-1 in league action.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 6, UMass Dartmouth 0
    • Plymouth State (18-3-1, 15-0-0 MASCAC)
    • UMass Dartmouth (8-12-2, 6-8-1 MASCAC)
How it Happened:
  • Neither team was able to break through during the opening period.
  • UMass Dartmouth had a chance on a 3-on-2 with just over five minutes remaining in the period, but Brawley blockered it aside.
  • Redick got the scoring started early in the second. Junior Carson Lanceleve (Stewiacke, Nova Scotia) dropped a pass for Redick at the bottom of the right circle and his wrist shot beat the Corsairs' goaltender to the glove side just 1:10 into the frame.
  • Redick struck again just 26 seconds later when his shot from the top of the left circle deflected off a UMD stick and fluttered over the goalie's shoulder.
  • Plymouth State extended the lead to 3-0 with a shorthanded goal late in the frame. Junior Colin Tracy (Bow, N.H.) fired a two-line pass through the neutral zone to Abbate, who skated in alone for the goal with 5:53 left in the period.
  • PSU tacked on another shorthanded score at the 12:15 mark of the third period, when senior Niks Krollis (Riga, Latvia) skated zone to zone before finding sophomore Connor Tait (Boyds, Md.) behind the defense. Tait whipped a wrist shot just inside the right post to make it 4-0.
  • The Panthers pushed the margin to 5-0 late in the third when sophomore Anton Jellvik (Taby, Sweden) banged home the rebound of a Krollis shot during a power play with 3:15 left to play.
  • Tartaglio capped the scoring with just 1:12 left on the clock. Sophomore Dante Moretti (Powell, Ohio) fired a shot wide of the goal and the puck rebounded off the end boards to the weakside, where Tartaglio blasted it into the net to account for the final score.
By the Numbers:
  • Redick finished with two goals on just four shots to make him the sixth player with 20-plus points on the season.
  • Abbate tallied a goal and an assist to continue his climb up the all-time scoring leaderboard, while Krollis continue his hot play of late with another two points on two helpers.
  • Fourteen different players recorded a point for the Panthers.
  • Brawley made 31 stops to earn his fifth career shutout. Three have come this season.
  • PSU held a 46-31 advantage in shots and won 47-of-72 (65.3%) faceoffs.
  • It was a big night for the PSU penalty kill, as the Panthers held UMass Dartmouth scoreless in four power play chances, while netting a pair of shorthanded goals.
  • Plymouth State sweeps the season series for the third straight year and has won 11 straight games against the Corsairs. PSU's last regular season loss to UMD came on January 17, 2015.

Up Next:
  • Plymouth State is idle until next Saturday (Feb. 11) when Worcester State comes to town for a Senior Day tilt. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m.
