PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman
Will Redick (Collingwood, Ontario) notched his first career hat trick and senior
Brendahn Brawley (Morton, Pa.) earned the win between the pipes to match the program record for wins in a season as Plymouth State University skated past Worcester State University, 5-1, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink on
Senior Night Saturday evening.
For the second straight game, Redick tallied a pair of first period goals as Plymouth State raced out to the lead. Classmate
Payton Schaly (Orillia, Ontario) made it 3-0 eight minutes into the second period and Redick completed the hat trick less than three minutes later.
The Lancers cut into the deficit midway through the third period before graduate student
Ben Chipman (North Vancouver, British Columbia) accounted for the final score with an empty netter with 3:28 left on the clock.
Brawley improves to 18-2-1 on the year, matching the program record for wins in a season.
Prior to the contest senior
Myles Abbate (Norwell, Mass.) was honored after eclipsing the 100-point threshold for his career in a road game last week.
Plymouth State also recognized its senior class during an on-ice
Senior Day ceremony; Abbate, Brawley, Chipman,
Kyler Harding (Wilmington, N.C.),
Ted Austin (Sylvania, Ohio),
Jacob Laurin (Stockholm, Sweden),
Colin Stevens (Concord, N.H.),
Jovan Zimmerman (Boulder, Colo.),
Niks Krollis (Riga, Latvia) and
Lukas Holmqvist (Lerum, Sweden).
The Panthers, ranked 12th in the country, extend their program-best win streak to 15 games, improving to 19-3-1 overall and 16-0-0 in the MASCAC. Worcester State falls to 11-11-1 and 10-5-1 in league action.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 5, Worcester State 1
- Plymouth State (19-3-1, 16-0-0 MASCAC)
- Worcester State (11-11-1, 10-5-1 MASCAC)
How it Happened:
- Redick extended his recent tear by opening the scoring at the 8:27 mark of the first. Abbate skated in from the right side and dropped the puck off for Redick along the goal line. His low angle shot beat the Lancers' goaltender for the quick 1-0 lead.
- Redick potted his second of the night just over three minutes later. Abbate took the puck into the corner on the left side, then slipped a pass to Redick alone in the slot and his quick shot found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
- Brawley made a big save with 6:26 left in the first, then stuffed the rebound to preserve the advantage.
- Redick nearly completed the hat trick in the first period but his redirection at the far side post was just wide of the mark with 4:23 left on the clock.
- Laurin flew in with a head of steam on a 3-on-1 break with the final minutes, but his wrist shot just missed the top left corner and the Panthers would take the 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
- Plymouth State continued to attack in the second period. Abbate rang the pipe with a laser from the left side and less than a minute later Schaly fired a shot off the right post that deflected off the post into the goalie's skate and in at the 7:57 mark.
- Redick completed the hat trick just two-and-a-half minutes later as he redirected Krollis' shot from the blue line to push the margin to 4-0.
- PSU put heavy pressure during a power play chance to start the third period, but was unable to cash in.
- Worcester State spoiled the shutout midway through the third when a shot nicked the post and went in at 10:34 mark.
- Chipman potted an empty netter with 3:28 left on the clock to account for the final score.
By the Numbers:
- Redick has been a one-man wrecking crew in the month of February, totaling six goals and three assists in three games.
- PSU's last hat trick came in a 12-1 rout of Salem State on Dec. 4, 2021, when two players accomplished the feat; junior Jeromey Rancourt (Lewiston, Maine) and alumnus JR Barone, who finished with four goals.
- Brawley made 20 saves to improve to 18-2-1, matching the program record for wins in a season.
- Abbate had a three point game with three assists. His 106 career points are tied for the tenth-most on PSU's all-time scoring leaders list.
- Plymouth State outshot the Lancers by a 43-21 margin.
- PSU went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Worcester State finished 0-for-2.
- The team is now just two wins shy of the program record for victories in a season. The 2015-16 team finished 21-5-1.
- The Panthers improve to 10-0-1 in the last 11 meetings between the two teams and 56-11-5 dating back to the 1987-88 season.
Up Next:
- Plymouth State wraps up the regular season with a pair of road contests next week, starting with a trip to Framingham State on Thursday (Feb. 16).
