PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Competing for the first time after a ten-day layoff, sophomore
Alyssa Craigie (Gilford, N.H.) and junior
Elena Cardoso (Hudson, Mass.) put up a fight at No. 2 doubles, but Rhode Island College was able to overpower Plymouth State University, 9-0, in Little East Conference (LEC) women's tennis action at the RIC Tennis Center on Tuesday afternoon.
Craigie and Cardoso came up just shy in an 8-6 battle at No. 2 pairs as the Anchorwomen swept doubles play.
Senior
Camilla Puzio (Holden, Mass.) was locked in a tight contest at No. 6 singles. She took the first set, PSU's lone set win of the afternoon, but came up just short in set two, falling 6-7 (4-7), before dropping the ten-point super breaker.
Plymouth State dips to 2-3 (0-2 LEC), while RIC jumps to 4-1 (2-0 LEC).

How it Happened:
- Craigie and Cardoso came close at No. 2 doubles, coming up just short in an 8-6 decision.
- Puzio teamed up with senior Sarah Asciutto (Manchester Central, Vt.) at No. 3 doubles, but the duo was tripped up by an 8-3 margin, while junior Tessa LaBarre (North Smithfield, R.I.) and freshman Chloe Ahern (Middleton, Mass.) fell 8-2 at No. 1 pairs.
- Puzio snagged the Panthers' only set victory to open No. 6 singles, but her opponent held on to take even the match with a 7-4 tiebreaker win, before taking control of the super breaker.
- Ascuitto dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 5 singles.
- LaBarre (No. 1), Craigie (No. 2) and Ahern (No. 3) all won three games in their setbacks, while Cardoso picked up a pair of games at No. 4.
By the Numbers:
- RIC has won the LEC Tournament in five of the last six seasons and has appeared in the championship match in nine of ten years.
- PSU's last win over the Anchorwomen came in the 2014 LEC Championship match (5-2) for the program's third LEC title.
- Plymouth State was coming off a ten-day layoff.
