PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University offense cruised to a.330 attack percentage and head coach
Joan Forge won her 100th career game as the Panthers sank Rhode Island College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-12), in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's volleyball match at Foley Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Nora Ryan (Groton, Conn.) was once again on top of her game, pounding nine kills and hitting .421, while juniors
Lilli Stogner (Weare, N.H.) and
Lindsey Sanderson (Gilford, N.H.) and senior
Aynslee King (Anacortes, Wash.) also had big days for the Panthers.
Prior to the contest, Plymouth State alumnus and Boston Bruins anthem singer Todd Angilly '99 ignited the Homecoming crowd with his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Several local youth volleyball players were in attendance as the program celebrated its
Camper Appreciation Day.
PSU leaned on aggressive serving to keep RIC off balance from start to finish to win a ninth straight match.
Forge improves to 100-39 (.719) in her five-plus seasons atop the program, while the Panthers move to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in LEC play. RIC falls to 5-6 (1-2 LEC).
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 3, RIC 0
- Plymouth State (11-2, 2-0 LEC)
- RIC (5-6, 1-2 LEC)
How it Happened:
- Junior Makayla Marucci (Newton, Mass.) made a fantastic dig to set up the Panthers' first point as the hosts got out to an early lead. RIC pulled to within one at 11-10, but Marucci ripped off a pair of aces and Stogner smashed a kill to give PSU some breathing room. Another Stogner kill and pair of aces pushed the lead to 22-13 and Ryan wrapped up the 25-18 win with an ace of her own to close out the opening set.
- The Anchorwomen started strong in set two, building an early lead, but a block by King tied the score at 10-10 and Plymouth State wouldn't look back. Freshman Emma Hampton (Durham, N.H.) served the Panthers to the lead and Stogner and Ryan combined for three straight kills as the lead grew to 18-11. PSU continued to tack on until King and Hampton teamed up for a double block to close out a 25-15 win.
- Junior Imalay Rodriguez Martinez (Juncos, Puerto Rico) came up big at the service line with back-to-back aces to help the hosts take an 11-7 lead in set three. Stogner smashed a pair of kills before serving three straight points of her own as the advantage grew to 19-11 and freshman Abigail Bassingthwaite (Wentworth, N.H.) made the most of her time on the court with two kills and a block in the final five points as the Panthers closed out the sweep with a 25-12 win.
By the Numbers:
- Ryan posted nine kills against just one error to hit .421 for the match, which was remarkably her lowest output for the week after hitting .714 on Tuesday and .545 on Wednesday. She has just three attack errors over her last 12 sets.
- Stogner pounded seven kills and hit .300, while adding eight digs and a pair of aces, while King finished with six kills, two blocks and hit .556.
- Sanderson added four kills without an error.
- Marucci finished with a match-best 16 digs, while Rodriguez Martinez chipped in with eight.
- Sophomore Kalista Butler (Philipsburg, Pa.) totaled 15 assists and seven digs, while classmate Riley McDonough (Gilford, N.H.) added 15 assists of her own.
- Plymouth State hit .330 for the match, while limiting the Anchorwomen to .000. PSU's defense hasn't allowed a team to hit higher than .136 since returning from the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament over Labor Day weekend.
- PSU improves to 26-8 against RIC all time and has swept each of the last three meetings.
Up Next:
- The Panthers head to Southern Maine for another LEC contest on Wednesday (Oct. 4). First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
