PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Four members of the Plymouth State University men's ice hockey team were among a group of student-athletes honored by the New England Hockey Writers Association (NEHWA) when the organization announced its annual awards recipients on Thursday.
Senior
Kalle Andersson (Taby, Sweden), junior
Connor Tait (Boyds, Md.) and sophomores
Rider McCallum (Langley, British Columbia) and
Will Redick (Collingwood, Ontario) were all named New England Division II-III All-Stars.
The foursome played key roles in Plymouth State's historical season. The Panthers won their first NCAA Tournament game, a 5-2 win over #13 Cortland, to advance to the national quarterfinals. PSU set a new program record for wins in a season, finishing 24-3-2 on the year, while claiming a fifth-straight Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Tournament title.
Redick, an AHCA First Team All-American and Second Team All-USCHO selection, led the nation in goals and points and was second in assists. The MASCAC Player of the Year and All-MASCAC First Team selection was also tied for the most power play goals (11) in the country.
Andersson went 21-3-1 between the pipes to post the second-highest winning percentage (.860) in the country. He ranked 14th in the nation in goals against average (1.84) and was 22nd with a .932 save percentage, claiming All-MASCAC First Team honors.
Tait ranked tenth in the nation with 1.31 points per game, finishing the season with 18 goals, 20 assists and 38 points. He tied for the team lead with four game-winning goals, a mark that was tied for 12th most in all of Division III. He recorded a point in 25-of-29 games played to earn All-MASCAC First Team recognition.
McCallum was the one of the top-scoring defensemen in the country. His 21 assists were tied for third among blue liners, while his 25 points were tied for fourth-most in the nation. McCallum finished with a +19 rating and was second on the team with 24 blocked shots to garner an All-MASCAC First Team nod.
The quartet will be honored along with the other award winners at the annual NEHWA awards reception at the Prince Restaurant in Saugus, Mass. on Apr. 23. Food and beverages will be served at 6:00 p.m., with the awards presentation to begin at 7:00 p.m. Cost of the reception is $45 per person.
