WBB: Panthers rally late, but Southern Maine holds on for LEC win

GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Ashley Stephens (Pembroke, N.H.) led a fourth quarter surge, scoring 13 points in the frame, but the comeback attempt fell short as the Plymouth State University women's basketball team fell to the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 63-56, in a Little East Conference (LEC) matchup at Warren G. Hill Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.

The Huskies led by 14 points with 5:41 left in the fourth quarter before the Panthers burst into a 13-1 run, cutting the deficit to two points, 57-55, with a shade over a minute left in regulation. Southern Maine knocked down two free throws in the final minute to stop the would-be comeback and sneak away with the conference victory.

Stephens finished the evening with a game-high 19 points, while junior Hailey Malozzi (Maynard, Mass.) added 18 points of her own. Junior Elli Cox (Deerfield, N.H.) tallied eight points and seven rebounds in the losing effort for the Panthers.

Plymouth State drops to 3-13 (0-8 LEC), while the Huskies improve to 9-8 (5-3 LEC).
