VB: Riley, Panthers shut down Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. – Sophomore Sydney Riley (Haverhill, Mass.) turned in another error-free performance, recording six kills (.462) and two blocks as Plymouth State University swept Rivier University, 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-12), in a non-conference women's volleyball match at Muldoon Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

Plymouth State controlled the opening set after building an early five-point lead, then used fast starts to cruise to wins in sets two and three. Freshman Alice Borriello Diaz (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) and graduate student Ella Koelb (Auburn, N.H.) led the offense with eight kills apiece, while sophomore Danielle Emerson (Biddeford, Maine) stuffed the stat sheet with 18 assists, 11 digs and four aces.

The Panthers, winners of nine straight, improve to 11-4 on the season, while the Raiders fall to 6-9.

    • Plymouth State (11-4)
    • Rivier (6-9)
How it Happened:
  • Freshman Fiona Bailey (Wrentham, Mass.) registered a kill before classmate Sya McKay (Somersworth, N.H.) fired off three straight aces to make it 8-3 in set one. Rivier pulled within three, but Riley's kill and block pushed the margin to 19-14, forcing a timeout. The teams traded points the rest of the way, with junior Annalyn Cahill (Mystic, Conn.) sealing the 25-19 win with a kill.
  • McKay and Koelb tallied two kills apiece as PSU bolted to a 10-1 lead in set two. The Raiders cut it to 14-9, but Cahill's kill sparked a 9-1 surge. Borriello Diaz hammered three kills during the run and a Rivier miscue closed out the frame, 25-12.
  • Emerson fueled a 7-0 run to open set three with three aces. Back-to-back Raider errors stretched the lead to 14-2, and the Panthers coasted to another 25-12 win to secure the sweep.

  • Borriello Diaz posted eight kills (.313), five digs, and three aces.
  • Koelb chipped in 13 assists, eight kills, six digs, and two aces.
