VB: Koelb’s triple-double not enough in setback to Keene State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Graduate student Ella Koelb (Auburn, N.H.) recorded her fourth triple-double of the season, but Plymouth State University saw its 10-match winning streak snapped in a 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 23-25) setback to Keene State College in Little East Conference (LEC) women's volleyball action at Foley Gymnasium on Wednesday.

After dropping the opening set, Plymouth State regrouped with a strong performance in set two to even the match at 1-1. In the pivotal third, Koelb's kill tied it at 22-22 to force an Owls' timeout, but Keene State responded with three straight points to regain control. The visitors raced to a 6-1 lead in the fourth, though PSU battled back to go ahead 20-16. KSC answered with a 4-0 run out of a timeout and, despite a late kill from junior Annalyn Cahill (Mystic, Conn.), closed out the match to secure the 3-1 win.

Plymouth State falls for the first time in more than a month, dipping to 12-5 (2-1 LEC), while Keene State improves to 7-10 (1-2 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 1, Keene State 3
    • Plymouth State (12-5, 2-1 LEC)
    • Keene State (7-10, 1-2 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • The Owls used a six-point run to erase an early deficit and take a 9-6 lead in the opening set. PSU stayed within striking distance, and a pair of Koelb aces around a Cahill kill tied the score at 18-18. Keene State answered with six straight points, and PSU's late rally came up short as the first set ended, 25-22.
  • Set two was tight throughout, featuring nine ties and five lead changes. Freshman Sya McKay (Somersworth, N.H.) slammed consecutive kills to snap a 13-13 tie and spark a 7-1 spurt for a 20-14 lead. The Owls pulled within two, 22-20, but a missed serve gave PSU the ball back, and an ace followed by a Cahill kill closed out the 25-20 win.
  • Keene State took an early lead in set three and maintained a four-point edge into the middle stages. McKay's kill and block, and an ace from junior Christa Imbriano (Wakefield, Mass.), tied the score at 17-17. The teams traded points up to 22-22 before KSC capitalized on a Panther miscue, then added a kill and block to claim a 25-22 victory.
  • KSC raced out to a 6-1 advantage in the fourth, but Plymouth State chipped away, and a long Imbriano service run knotted the score at 9-9. Sophomore Sydney Riley (Haverhill, Mass.) tallied back-to-back kills followed by two straight blocks as PSU went ahead 20-16. The Owls answered with four straight points out of a timeout to tie it again. A kill and PSU error put the visitors up 24-22. Cahill extended the set with another kill, forcing a Keene State timeout, but the Owls closed it out with one final kill to seal the 25-23 win.
By the Numbers:
  • Koelb finished with 17 kills, 15 assists, 14 digs, and two aces for her fourth triple-double.

  • Cahill added 10 kills.
