VB: Panthers advance to semifinals behind McKay’s dominant night

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Sya McKay (Somersworth, N.H.) slammed 16 kills and hit nearly .500 to lead third-seeded Plymouth State University to a 3-1 (25-18, 25-12, 22-25, 25-22) win over sixth-seeded Keene State College in the first round of the Little East Conference (LEC) Women's Volleyball Tournament at Foley Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

Junior Annalyn Cahill (Mystic, Conn.) was unstoppable in the opening set, pounding seven kills without an error as the Panthers pulled away late. Graduate student Ella Koelb (Auburn, N.H.) took over in set two with eight kills of her own as Plymouth State coasted to a 2-0 lead.

It looked like PSU might complete the sweep after building a 9-3 lead in the third, but the Owls rallied, using a late surge to snap a 22-22 tie and extend the match. Plymouth State built a six-point cushion in the fourth before Keene State clawed back to within one, 21-20, but McKay and Koelb notched three straight kills as PSU held on for the victory.

The Panthers improve to 21-7 and advance to face second-seeded UMass Boston in Thursday's semifinal (Nov. 13). Keene State closes the season at 14-14.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, Keene State 1
    • Plymouth State (21-7)
    • Keene State (14-14)
How it Happened:
  • Cahill slammed three early kills as PSU raced out to a 10-3 lead. Keene State chipped away to make it 17-15, but two more Cahill kills and a Cahill/McKay block stretched the margin to 20-15. Koelb and McKay sealed the 25-18 win with back-to-back kills.
  • Sophomore Danielle Emerson (Biddeford, Maine) and freshman Alice Borriello Diaz (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) served PSU to a commanding 12-1 lead in set two. Koelb tallied four kills during the stretch, while McKay added three kills and a block. The Panthers cruised from there, 25-12.
  • McKay ripped consecutive aces to spark a 9-2 start in the third, but the Owls rallied to take a 14-10 lead. The teams traded points before Cahill's kill tied it at 22-22, though Keene State scored three straight to take the set, 25-22.
  • In the fourth, sophomore Sydney Riley (Haverhill, Mass.) posted two early kills to help PSU open a 9-3 advantage. Keene State cut it to 11-8, but PSU responded with a spurt as Riley's kill made it 15-9. The Owls fought back again, closing to 18-17, but PSU stayed in front. With a 21-20 edge, McKay and Koelb delivered three straight kills, and a KSC service error clinched the 25-22 match win.
