WH: Panthers honor veterans, battle Spartans in LEC matchup

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Juniors Laura Castronova (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and Lilli Warnock (Bernardsville, N.J.) both scored, but Vermont State University Castleton pulled away in the third period to top Plymouth State University, 5-2, in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink during the annual Salute the Troops event on Saturday evening.

Prior to the contest, Plymouth State held a pregame ceremony honoring veterans for their service, including a ceremonial puck drop performed by military students and a presentation of colors by members of the New Hampshire Army National Guard.

Additionally, the Plymouth State Office of Military Services announced the establishment of the Sargeant Major James E. Goss Prize, recognizing the 1968 Plymouth State graduate's decades of service to the university.

Castleton scored the lone goal of the first period, but Castronova evened things up seven minutes into the second. The Spartans responded with consecutive goals just over two minutes apart to take a 3-1 lead into the final frame.

Warnock pulled PSU within one early in the third, but Castleton answered with a power play goal with 7:50 remaining, then added an insurance tally in the closing minutes.

Plymouth State slides to 2-3-0 (0-3-0 LEC), while the Spartans improve to 3-3-0 (2-2-0 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 2, VTSU Castleton 5
    • Plymouth State (2-3-0, 0-3-0 LEC)
    • VTSU Castleton (3-3-0, 2-2-0 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • Junior Teagan Wilson (Salisbury, Mass.) made flurry of early saves to keep the Spartans off the board through the first five minutes.
  • Castleton broke through late in the period when a shot from the right side was redirected to the far post and knocked in with 4:40 left to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
  • Freshman Lisi Palmer (Brunswick, Maine) made a strong move up the right side early in the second before cutting to the goal, but her shot sailed just wide.
  • Plymouth State pulled even at the 7:16 mark of the second. Junior Jamie Steinmetz (Madison, Wis.) fired a shot from the point that deflected off a skater and the end boards. Castronova crashed the slot and buried a quick shot to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Spartans regained the lead roughly four minutes later on a deflection at the near post to make it 2–1.
  • Castleton extended the advantage to 3–1 on a rebound goal with 6:16 left in the period.
  • Warnock took a pass in the defensive zone and raced up the right side, creating space around a defender before beating the goalie to the stick side to cut the deficit to 3–2 less than five minutes into the third.
  • Castleton restored the two-goal margin with a power play tally with 7:50 remaining, then added an insurance goal in the final four minutes to seal the win.
By the Numbers:
  • Warnock's goal was her first of the season; Castronova netted her second.
  • Steinmetz, senior Morgan Cunningham (Wrentham, Mass.), and freshman Olivia Robbins (Poolesville, Md.) and Maddie Wiggins (Loveland, Colo.) recorded assists.
  • Wilson finished with 39 saves, her highest total since January 2024.
  • Castleton held a 44-26 advantage in shots, including 22-6 margin in the opening period.
  • PSU went 0-for-2 on the power play; Castleton was 1-for-4.
