20251121 - WH at NEC

Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Assistant Athletics Director, Athletics Communications

WH: Panthers’ massive shot margin not enough at NEC

HENNIKER, N.H. – Plymouth State University dominated every facet except the scoreboard, as a standout performance by the opposing goaltender lifted New England College to a 3-1 win over the Panthers in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's ice hockey matchup at Lee Clement Arena on Friday evening.

The Panthers outshot the Pilgrims by a staggering 60-18 margin, including a 21-3 advantage in the third period, but NEC capitalized on two of its three opportunities in the final frame to secure the victory.

NEC opened the scoring with a power-play goal late in the first period. After a scoreless second, senior Katie Porrello (Milford, Conn.) jammed home the equalizer just over a minute into the third. The Pilgrims responded only 16 seconds later to retake the lead, then added an insurance tally midway through the frame. Despite controlling play throughout, Plymouth State couldn't cut into the deficit.

Plymouth State falls to 2-4-0 (0-4-0 LEC), while NEC improves to 3-4-0 (2-3-0 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 1, NEC 3
    • Plymouth State (2-4-0, 0-4-0 LEC)
    • NEC (3-4-0, 2-3-0 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State came out firing, generating a flurry of early chances but unable to beat the NEC netminder.
  • Despite a 16-8 shot advantage, the Panthers trailed 1-0 after the hosts converted a late first-period power play.
  • PSU continued to control play in the second, racking up 23 more shots, but remained down 1-0 entering the third.
  • The Panthers tied the game just 1:13 into the final frame when freshman Sofia Cuozzo (Guilford, Conn.) drove into the zone and dished to Porrello, who tucked home the 1-1 equalizer.
  • NEC regained the lead only 16 seconds later on a deflected puck that landed on a Pilgrim stick in the slot.
  • PSU allowed just two shots the rest of the period, but NEC added an insurance goal midway through, and the Panthers' relentless pressure couldn't break through again.
By the Numbers:
  • Porrello scored her second goal of the season; Cuozzo earned her first assist and now leads the team with four points.
  • Junior Teagan Wilson (Salisbury, Mass.) stopped 15 shots.
  • Porrello led the Panthers with 10 shots; senior Morgan Cunningham (Wrentham, Mass.) added seven.
  • PSU outshot NEC 60-18.
  • The Panthers went 0-for-2 on the power play; NEC finished 1-for-3.
