VB: Koelb, McKay power Panthers past St. Joe’s

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Graduate student Ella Koelb (Auburn, N.H.) and freshman Sya McKay (Somersworth, N.H.) pounded 10 kills apiece as Plymouth State University swept Saint Joseph's College of Maine, 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-21) in non-conference women's volleyball action at Foley Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

PSU jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set and never looked back, as Koelb hammered six kills in the frame. The Panthers raced out to another quick start in set two, building a 6-0 advantage before Saint Joseph's rallied to tie the score at 16-16. A pair of blocks sandwiched around a Koelb ace shifted the momentum back to Plymouth State, which held on for the win. The third set stayed tight until the late stages, when PSU built a 19-16 edge. McKay's 10th kill of the night sealed the sweep.

With the victory, Plymouth State extends its win streak to five and improves to 7-4. The Monks drop to 2-7.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, St. Joe's 0
    • Plymouth State (7-4)
    • St. Joe's (2-7)
How it Happened:
  • Freshman Alice Borriello Diaz (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) opened the match with a kill, while sophomore Danielle Emerson (Biddeford, Maine) followed with a pair of aces to spark a 5-0 run and force a quick St. Joe's timeout. PSU pushed the lead to 13-5 on another Borriello Diaz kill and coasted from there, taking the set 25-14.
  • Emerson again keyed a fast start in set two, using consecutive aces and kills from McKay and Koelb to establish a 6-0 lead. St. Joe's battle back to grab a brief 16-15 lead, but sophomore Sydney Riley (Haverhill, Mass.) notched a kill and the Panthers registered three blocks during a four-point surge to go ahead for good, 19-16. The Monks closed to within 24-22, but McKay's kill finished it off as PSU went up 2-0.
  • In set three, McKay's kill gave the Panthers a 12-8 cushion, but the Monks rallied to even things at 16-16. A St. Joe's service error and a kill from junior Annalyn Cahill (Mystic, Conn.) restored PSU's lead, and four straight Monks' miscues created a 23-18 advantage. McKay then delivered the match-clinching kill.
By the Numbers:
  • Koelb recorded 10 kills without an error (.400), 17 assists, and six digs.
  • Emerson finished with 19 assists, 12 digs, and four aces.
