20250920 - VB vs Bridgewater State

Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Asst. Director of Communications for Athletics

VB: McKay, Panthers overpower Bridgewater State

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Sya McKay (Somersworth, N.H.) smashed a match-high 12 kills and hit .409 as Plymouth State University made quick work of Bridgewater State University, 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-8) in a non-conference women's volleyball match at Foley Gymnasium on Saturday.

McKay and graduate student Ella Koelb (Auburn, N.H.) registered early kills as the Panthers raced out to an 8-0 lead in set one on the way to a comfortable win. Set two stayed close in the early stages, but PSU erased a three-point deficit with strong net play and a long service run from graduate student Ava Duymazlar (Center Harbor, N.H.), and the Panthers overwhelmed Bridgewater State in the third set behind a 10-0 surge.

Winners of six straight, the Panthers jump to 8-4, while Bridgewater State slips to 6-3.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, Bridgewater State 0
    • Plymouth State (8-4)
    • Bridgewater State (6-3)
How it Happened:
  • Koelb and McKay slammed two kills apiece as sophomore Danielle Emerson (Biddeford, Maine) served the Panthers to a quick 8-0 lead. PSU never looked back, taking advantage of several Bridgewater State errors to build an 18-4 lead, and the Panthers would coast to a 25-13 win.
  • McKay put away an overpass as the teams went back-and-forth to start the second set. Koelb found the floor to cap a long rally and McKay's kill gave PSU a 15-12 lead to force a Bridgewater State timeout. Plymouth State continued the momentum out of the break as Duymazlar ripped a pair of aces to extend the lead to 18-12. The teams traded points the rest of the way and a missed serve gave PSU the 25-16 victory.
  • The Panthers grabbed an early 6-2 lead in set three. Freshman Alice Borriello Diaz (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) and McKay teamed up for a block, and McKay's off-speed winner pushed the advantage to 11-5, as BSU burned a timeout. The pause did little to slow the momentum, as Duymazlar's ace out of the break ignited a 12-1 surge and a service error wrapped up the 25-8 win.
By the Numbers:
  • McKay slammed 12 kills and hit .409, adding two blocks and two aces to her stat line.
  • Koelb posted another complete game with 10 kills and 13 assists.

  • Plymouth State improves to 7-4 in the head-to-head series.
