FB: Panthers sixth in first New England D-III poll

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Plymouth State University is ranked sixth in the first Grinold Chapter New England Division III Football Coaches Poll, the organization announced Tuesday.

Plymouth State (3-0, 2-0 MASCAC) collected 50 points in the poll, slotting between fifth-ranked University of New England (61) and seventh-ranked MIT (43).

Salve Regina (3-0) earned eight first-place votes to secure the top spot with 106 points. Endicott, Tufts, and Williams each received one first-place vote to round out the top four.

PSU was joined by MASCAC counterpart Framingham State, which is tied for 10th, while Fitchburg State and Mass. Maritime also received votes.

The Panthers have raced out to a strong start behind a powerful offense. PSU leads the MASCAC in points per game (46.0), total yards per game (407.7), rushing yards per game (266.7), and rushing touchdowns (16) in the early going.

Graduate student Gregory Walker (Boxford, Mass.) ran for 185 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-21 week one win over NEC. In week two, graduate quarterback Braden Lynn (Littleton, Mass.) connected with junior Jacob Morris (Kennebunk, Maine) for a 52-yard Hail Mary, and Walker added the game-winning two-point conversion as PSU edged Worcester State, 47-46, in overtime. Last weekend, Lynn went a perfect 12-for-12 for 194 yards, while Walker added three more touchdowns in a 42-21 win at Bridgewater State.

The New England Division III Football Poll is presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation, which also serves as the title sponsor of the weekly Gold Helmet Awards presented by the New England Football Writers Association throughout the season.

A panel representing four New England Division III playing conferences serves as the voters in this year's poll. Rankings will be released each week through November 18th. For more information on the Grinold Chapter of the National Football Foundation, visit www.grinoldchapter.com.
