VB: Riley perfect as Panthers push win streak to eight

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Sydney Riley (Haverhill, Mass.) smashed 15 kills without an error to lead Plymouth State University past Rhode Island College, 3-1 (25-14, 21-25, 25-18, 25-15), in a Little East Conference women's volleyball match at Foley Gymnasium on Camper Appreciation Day on Saturday.

The Panthers controlled play throughout the opening set, but the Anchorwomen answered in set two. Riley's kill tied the frame at 21-21, but RIC rattled off the next four points to even the match. Riley took charge in the third, recording five kills as PSU used a 6-0 run to pull away. Plymouth State carried the momentum into the fourth, racing out to an early lead and cruising to the win.

The victory extends the Panthers' winning streak to eight, improving their record to 10-4 (1-0 LEC), while RIC slips to 6-6 (0-1 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 3, RIC 1
    • Plymouth State (10-4, 1-0 LEC)
    • RIC (6-6, 0-1 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • In the opener, freshman Sya McKay (Somersworth, N.H.) sparked a 4-0 run with a kill to make it 9-3. The Panthers extended the margin to 18-10 on a RIC error, and Riley's late kills sealed a decisive 25-14 win.
  • Set two was tight throughout, with neither side leading by more than three. RIC held a 21-19 edge late, but back-to-back kills from junior Annalyn Cahill (Mystic, Conn.) and Riley tied it at 21. Out of a timeout, the Anchorwomen reeled off four straight points to claim the set, 25-21.
  • RIC jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the third, but McKay's kill helped slow the momentum. A winner from freshman Fiona Bailey (Wrentham, Mass.) put PSU ahead, 14-13, and the Panthers never trailed again. Leading 19-18, McKay and graduate student Ella Koelb (Auburn, N.H.) combined for a block before freshman Alice Borriello Diaz (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) served out the final five points, including an ace on set point.
  • Plymouth State started strong in the fourth, with Koelb's kill pushing the lead to 8-3. Senior Veronika Castro Rodriguez (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico) added two aces as the advantage swelled to 19-8, and McKay capped the match with a pair of kills to finish off the 25-15 win.
