PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Jenna Childs
(Cranston, R.I.) scored with 4:20 remaining in the second overtime
Saturday afternoon to lead the Rhode Island College women¹s
soccer team past Plymouth State University, 2-1, in Little East
Conference action at the RIC Soccer Field.
Despite being outshot, 19-9, in the game, and 4-1 in overtime, RIC
was able to snap a six-game losing streak on Childs¹ first
collegiate goal. After an Anchorwoman throw-in, the ball
bounced around in the top corner of the box. Childs collected the
ball and lofted it to the far corner of the net to set off the
host¹s celebration.
RIC improves to 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the Little East, while PSU
suffers its third consecutive loss, dropping to 5-5-1 overall and
1-3 in league action.
The Panthers opened the game¹s scoring with freshman
Jordan MacNeely (Marstons Mills, Mass.) putting
the visitors up, 1-0, with just 2:49 remaining in the first half.
Sophomore Amy Green (Atkinson, N.H.) crossed a
pass from the left side that MacNeely spun and kicked out of midair
to beat RIC junior goalkeeper Maddie Pirri (Bristol, R.I.).
The game was played fairly evenly through the first 45 minutes,
with the visitors holding a slight advantage, 7-4, shots. The
Anchorwomen had three corner kicks, while the Panthers registered
two attempts.
RIC senior Christina Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) tied the game up,
1-1, just 5:50 into the second half on a set up by freshman Alison
Massed (Warren, R.I.) and junior Danielle Cartier (Lincoln, R.I.).
It was her team-leading fourth goal of the year and snapped a
333:28 scoreless streak for the club dating back to Sept. 16.
That would be it for the rest of regulation, as the two teams
remained deadlocked at one goal apiece. The Panthers once again
outshot their hosts, 8-4, and held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks,
during the second stanza. PSU missed twice, while RIC missed once,
in open-net opportunities in the second half.
PSU nearly won the game in the 105th minute, but senior
Lauren Lavery's (Nashua, NH) free kick from 25
yards out hit the crossbar. Childs won the game 1:17 later.
Pirri made eight saves to earn the win (2-7), while her
counterpart, PSU sophomore goalkeeper Angelina
LaBroad (Hampton, NH) made three stops in a losing effort
(2-5-1).
PSU plays its next two games at home, beginning Wednesday against
Castleton (4:30 p.m.). Rhode Island College will play at
Wesleyan on Wednesday.
