PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore
Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) made 28 saves, but #3 Elmira College used a four-goal third period to skate past Plymouth State University, 7-0, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink on Friday night.
PSU hung tough with the national-championship contender, trailing 1-0 after one and having several near misses on the offensive end. The Soaring Eagles took control in the final stanza, though, to pick up the win.
Plymouth State falls to 6-13-1 overall (4-10-0 NEHC), while Elmira remains unbeaten in conference play (14-0-0) and moves to 18-2-1 overall.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 0, Elmira 7
- Plymouth State (6-13-1, 4-10-0 NEHC)
- Elmira (18-2-1, 14-0-0 NEHC)
How it Happened:
- The Panthers played even the first third of the opening period, keeping offensive zone pressure on the Soaring Eagles and forcing the visiting goaltender into a handful of difficult saves.
- Elmira opened the scoring midway through the period when senior Mary McCafferty (Wall Township, N.J.) knocked in a rebound from the far side at 10:06.
- A penalty inside the final minute of the period gave PSU a wraparound power play chance and junior Chantelle Ross (Ottawa, Ontario) and senior Georgia McLellan (Kamloops, British Columbia) both had close-range shots just sail wide in the opening minute of the second.
- The Soaring Eagles extended the lead to 2-0 at the 10:45 mark of the period when junior Holley Riva (Lakeville, Conn.) skated around the goal and snuck a wrist shot to the top left corner.
- Elmira added another tally three minutes later when a rebound found the stick of freshman Erika Goleniak (Canton, Mich.) on the weakside for the 3-0 advantage.
- McLellan sent a long pass through the neutral zone to catch Elmira on a line change during a PSU power play, but the shot from junior Meghan Hamilton (Walpole, Mass.) was just off target.
- The visitors used a four-goal third period to put the game out of reach.
By the Numbers:
- Julian's 28 saves were her fourth-most this season.
- PSU blocked 18 shots with freshman Brenna Smith (Medfield, Mass.) leading the way with five.
- Plymouth State finished 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Soaring Eagles were 0-for-1.
- Senior Siri Brett (East Wenatchee, Wash.) fired a team-high three shots on goal.
- Hamilton and junior Addie Swanson (Eagle River, Alaska) combined to win 21-of-36 faceoffs.
