MEDFORD, Mass. – Seniors
Terrell Lewis (New Boston, N.H.) and
Jacob Rigoli (Essex, Vt.) both represented the Plymouth State University men's indoor track & field team at the Tufts National Qualifying Meet at Tufts University Saturday afternoon in the Gantcher Center, looking to improve their national standings to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championship.
Lewis came into the competition as the second-fastest in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.24 seconds. In the preliminary round he overtook the field in his heat, crossing the line in 8.29 seconds to top the closest competitor by 0.03 seconds, but was unable to finish in the finals.
Rigoli claimed victory in the weight throw after a toss of 17.81 meters to win the event by a sizeable margin. He currently ranks 15th in the nation and is expected to be among the student-athletes included when the NCAA releases its qualifiers for the 2022 NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships.
"Although Jacob didn't throw farter today, he got some great technical experience that he'll bring with him into next week," said head coach
John Ostler. "I'm ecstatic that Jacob will be the first field event athlete to represent PSU at the national level. Although it looks like Terrell's season will end prematurely compared to his goals, he had a historical indoor career and it's a good moment to admire his entire career before turning the page to outdoor."
Though the NCAA does not officially announce the field for the National Championship until tomorrow, Rigoli is a shoe in to qualify as he ranks among the top-20 nationally.
