SB: Wilson’s gem (11 K’s) helps Panthers salvage split with WestConn

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Alyssa Wilson (Haverhill, Mass.) struck out 11 batters in a complete game win to help Plymouth State University split a Little East Conference (LEC) softball doubleheader with Western Connecticut State University at D&M Park on Saturday.

Wilson threw an absolute gem in game two, limiting the Wolves to just five hits and fanning 11 in an overpower performance to lift PSU to a 3-1 win. Freshman Samantha Fancher (Gales Ferry, Conn.) sped around the bases for a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first and senior Lauren Archambault (Rehoboth, Mass.) drove her in for a quick lead. The Panthers added a pair in the third and Wilson got huge strikeouts to end threats in the fifth and sixth innings to earn the victory.

WestConn banged out 12 hits and scored in five different innings to take game one by a 9-3 margin despite a good day at the plate from junior Sam McCann (Berlin, N.H.). McCann finished 2-for-2 with a solo homer and two RBI in the opener, while junior Rachyl Parslow (Temple, N.H.) also had a two-hit game.

Plymouth State ends the day at 12-17 (6-6 LEC), while WestConn moves to 14-18 and 2-10 in the LEC.

The Basics:
  • Game One: Plymouth State 3, WestConn 9
  • Game Two: Plymouth State 3, WestConn 1
    • Plymouth State (12-17, 6-6 LEC)
    • WestConn (14-18, 2-10 LEC)
How it Happened (Game One):
  • WestConn pushed a pair of runs across in the second, but McCann blasted her second homer of the year leading off the bottom of the inning to make it 2-1.
  • The Wolves came right back with three in the third to extend the lead to 5-1.
  • Sophomore Vanessa Bryan (Stoneham, Mass.) doubled and stole third ahead of back-to-back walks as PSU loaded the bases with one down in the bottom half. McCann drove in a run with a single and Parslow made it 5-3 after beating out an infield hit.
  • WestConn got a key two-out hit to score a run in the fourth, then tacked on a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to take the win.
By the Numbers (Game One):
  • McCann and Parslow both had two hits in as many at bats and the duo drove in all three runs. McCann also reached on a walk.
  • Bryan (1-for-4) doubled and scored a run, while freshman Madison Pelletier (New Gloucester, Maine) worked a pair of walks and crossed the plate once.
  • Sophomore Nicole LeBrun (Concord, N.H.) was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs (five earned) over 5.0 innings. Classmate Jersey Strum (Somersworth, N.H.) gave up a pair of runs over her two innings of work.

How it Happened (Game Two):
  • Wilson struck out two in the top of the first and Fancher delivered a sharp triple that rolled to the fence in right center to start the bottom half. Archambault beat out an infield hit to score Fancher for a quick 1-0 lead.
  • WestConn got a runner to third with two down in the third inning, but Wilson induced an infield popup to end the threat.
  • PSU came back in the bottom of the inning to score twice and extend the lead. With one down, Fancher raced around the bases, getting to third after a missed fly ball. Archambault followed with a single to make it 2-0.
  • Archambault was bunted to second, then scored on a bunt hit from freshman Mia Ly (Lowell, Mass.) when a throwing error allowed both runners to take an extra base.
  • The Wolves' first threat came in the fifth as a pair of singles sandwiched around a strikeout put runners on second and third with one down. One run came in on an RBI groundout, but Wilson limited the damage with a big strikeout to keep it a two-run game.
  • WestConn had one last chance in the sixth. After a strikeout to start the frame, a walk and perfect bunt single put the tying runs on base. Both moved into scoring position after a comebacker, but again Wilson came up with a big K to end the frame and the Wolves went down in order in the seventh.
By the Numbers (Game Two):
  • Archambault went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair, while Fancher finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
  • Ly and LeBrun also had hits for the Panthers.
  • Wilson tossed 128 pitches for the complete game victory. She scattered five hits and allowed two walks while striking out a career-high 11, easily topping her previous best of six.
  • With the win, Wilson moves to 4-2.

Up Next:
  • The Panthers head to the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday (Apr. 26) for another LEC twin bill. Game one is set for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch.
