NEW LONDON, N.H. – Junior captain
Taylor Healey (Campton, N.H.) scored in her second straight game, but Plymouth State University fell short as host Colby-Sawyer College snuck past the Panthers, 4-3 in overtime, in a non-conference field hockey game at Sally Shaw Veitch Track on Saturday afternoon.
The contest started with both teams trading chances, but the hosts broke the scoreless tie halfway through the first period. The Panthers pulled even in the second quarter when Healey cashed in on a penalty stroke opportunity to tie the game 1:15 into the frame. Junior
Kayla Antonucci (Windham, N.H.) and the PSU defense kept the Chargers off the board the rest of the period to send the game to halftime tied at one.
The third quarter was another back-and-forth battle, but with 3:30 left in the frame the Chargers regained the lead. Plymouth State answered back just 32 seconds later when junior
Savanah Connor (Dover, N.H.) cashed in for her first of the season.
The fourth quarter delivered some fireworks, as well. With 5:26 left in regulation, Colby-Sawyer regained the lead but once again the resilient Panthers responded quickly when freshman
Caroline Coleman (Conway, N.H.) fired a shot off a pass from junior
Athena Comeau (Rutland, Mass.) that found the back of the cage just 41 seconds later, sending the Panthers to a second straight overtime game.
Colby-Sawyer cashed in 6:15 into the extra period for the win.
The Panthers slip to 0-2, while Colby-Sawyer wins its opener.
