CASTLETON, Vt. – Plymouth State University rallied to turn a 3-0 deficit into a one-goal game, but Castleton University recovered to hold off the Panthers, 6-3, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's ice hockey action at Spartan Arena on Friday night.
Castleton scored a pair of goals just 17 seconds apart in the first period, then pushed the margin to 3-0 midway through the second. The Panthers clawed back, though, as seniors
Taylor Thomas (Prior Lake, Minn.) and
Addie Swanson (Eagle River, Alaska) each lit the lamp in a 26-second span to make it a 3-2 game heading to the third period.
The Spartans seemed to put the game away with back-to-back goals, but senior
Meghan Hamilton (Walpole, Mass.) kept PSU's hopes alive with her fourth of the year with 2:19 left on the clock. Plymouth State opted for the extra skater, but Castleton was able to secure the win with an empty net goal in the final minute.
Plymouth State slips to 2-14-0 (1-8-0 NEHC), while Castleton goes to 9-6-1 and 6-3-0 in conference play.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 3, Castleton 6
- Plymouth State (2-14-0, 1-8-0 NEHC)
- Castleton (9-6-1, 6-3-0 NEHC)
How it Happened:
- The hosts went ahead in the final seconds of a power play on a rebound goal at the 12:20 mark, then doubled the margin just 17 seconds later when a bouncing puck was backhanded in for a 2-0 lead.
- Castleton stretched the lead to 3-0 at 9:12 of the second on a perfect pass through the slot to a skater on the backdoor.
- Plymouth State broke through with 4:37 left in the frame when Thomas blocked a shot at the blue line and skated in on a breakaway. Her wrist shot beat the Spartans' goaltender to the glove side to cut the deficit to 3-1.
- Just 26 seconds later the Panthers made it a one-goal game. Senior Sophie Streed (Surry, N.H.) redirected a shot from the blue line by freshman Jacqueline Martin (Smithfield, R.I.) and Swanson jumped on the rebound to make it a 3-2 game.
- The Spartans' forecheck forced a turnover in the corner and Castleton converted to push the lead back to 4-2 7:44 into the third.
- The hosts seemingly put the game away six minutes later on a redirection to make it 5-2, but Plymouth State fought back.
- Senior Abigale McGee (Bozeman, Mont.) fired the puck the length of the ice and classmate Chantelle Ross (Ottawa, Ontario) flew down the ice to outskate the icing, before finding Hamilton streaking into the slot for the goal with 2:19 left on the clock.
- Castleton was able to ice the game with an empty net goal in the final minute to account for the final score.
By the Numbers:
- Hamilton and Swanson share the team-lead with four goals apiece.
- Thomas' tally was her second of the year.
- Martin, Streed, Ross and McGee all picked up assists. Martin's helper was her first career point, while Ross has six points over her last six games.
- PSU finished 0-for-1 on the power play, while the Spartans converted their only chance.
- The Spartans held a slight edge in shots, 33-27.
- Plymouth State blocked 12 shots, including three by McGee.
- Junior Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) finished with 27 saves in the losing effort.
- Castleton has a sizable advantage in the all-time series, though just three of the last 15 meetings have been decided by more than two goals, with six of the last 14 going to overtime.
Up Next:
- The same two teams are back at it again tomorrow (Jan. 14) to complete the home-and-home series. Puck drop at Hanaway Rink is set for 2:00 p.m.
