Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Assistant Athletics Director, Athletics Communications

WH: DeSimone’s hat trick sparks win at NEC

HENNIKER, N.H. – Sophomore Emily DeSimone (Waltham, Mass.) potted her first career hat trick to lead Plymouth State University to a 5-3 win over New England College in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's ice hockey game at Lee Clement Arena on Saturday.

After the Pilgrims scored early in the first, DeSimone netted back-to-back goals to give PSU the lead. NEC answered to tie the game at 2-2 and the score would stay tied into the first intermission.

DeSimone completed the hat trick midway through the second to give Plymouth State a lead it would not relinquish. PSU tacked on two more third period goals before NEC got one back to account for the final score.

The five-goal outburst was a season high for the Panthers, who improve to 3-16-0 and 2-10-0 in the NEHC. New England College moves to 4-14-1 and 1-10-1 in conference play.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 5, NEC 3
    • Plymouth State (3-16-0, 2-10-0 NEHC)
    • NEC (4-14-1, 1-10-1 NEHC)
How it Happened:
  • The Pilgrims stole the puck just outside the offensive zone, catching PSU in a line change, and converted the 2-on-1 break for the lead just 1:41 into play.
  • Plymouth State pulled even at the 4:13 mark when junior Lauren McNeil (Ottawa, Ontario) fired a shot on target from the blue line and DeSimone swatted in the rebound.
  • DeSimone struck again with 7:17 left in the period after batting home the rebound of a close-range shot by senior Addie Swanson (Eagle River, Alaska).
  • NEC pulled even just under two minutes later and the game went into intermission deadlocked at 2-2.
  • The Panthers went back in front midway through the second period as DeSimone completed the hat trick. Freshman Sanna Augustsson (Satila, Sweden) sent DeSimone a cross-ice pass through the neutral zone which was tipped into the corner. DeSimone flew in alone for a wrap-around attempt before lifting the rebound to the top right corner with 8:43 left in the frame.
  • PSU extended the lead to 4-2 6:14 into third when senior Chantelle Ross (Ottawa, Ontario) tipped in a blast from the blueline off the stick of junior Mia Zaniboni (Braintree, Mass.).
  • Swanson made it a three-goal game when she banged in the rebound of Ross' shot for a 5-2 lead with 11:27 remaining.
  • NEC got a goal back with 8:54 left on the clock, but the Panthers' lead was too large to overcome.
By the Numbers:
  • DeSimone moved into a tie for the team lead with five goals on the season, while her 13 points are most among the Panthers.
  • PSU's last hat trick came in November 2019 when alumna Alexis Fagan completed the task against St. Michael's College.
  • Swanson finished with a goal and two assists for her first multi-point game of the year, while Ross added a goal and an assist.
  • Six other Panthers also recorded assists in the win.
  • Swanson and senior Meghan Hamilton (Walpole, Mass.) combined to win 19-of-26 faceoffs.
  • Junior Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) made 22 saves in the victory.
  • Neither team was successful on the power play. PSU was 0-for-1, while the Pilgrims were 0-for-2.
  • Plymouth State outshot the Pilgrims by a 45-25 margin.
  • PSU improves to 13-1-1 against the Pilgrims over the last 15 meetings.

Up Next:
  • Plymouth State returns to Hanaway Rink for a matchup with Southern Maine on Friday (Jan. 27). Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m.
