BIDDEFORD, Maine – Senior
Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) made 25 saves, but the University of New England got past Plymouth State University, 6-0, in non-conference women's ice hockey action at the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday night.
The first period was tightly contested, with Plymouth State holding an 11-9 edge in shots on goal, but neither team was able to light the lamp as the game went into the first intermission deadlocked at 0-0.
UNE erupted for three goals in less than five minutes in the middle third of the second stanza and, despite some opportunities, the Panthers were unable to claw back. The hosts put the game out of reach in the final period.
Plymouth State dips to 0-1 to start the season, while UNE moves to 1-1 on the year.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 0, UNE 6
- Plymouth State (0-1)
- UNE (1-1)
How it Happened:
- Graduate student Abigale McGee (Bozeman, Mont.) entered the zone with a scoring change midway through the opening period, but her short was blocked. The Nor'easters got to the puck and skated in but Julian was up to the test and the hosts were unable to put the rebound on net.
- PSU put a flurry of shots on target later in the frame, but the UNE netminder was up to the task.
- UNE had a prime chance as the Nor'easters skated in on a breakaway, but senior Isabella Borbridge (Calgary, Alberta) made a great poke check to break up the opportunity.
- Plymouth State got good zone pressure during the lone power play chance of the frame, with freshman Lilli Warnock (Bernardsville, N.J.) firing four shots during the player-up chance, but PSU was unable to convert.
- Junior Libby Carter (Franklin, Mass.) had a pair of shots sail just wide as the power play wound down and freshman Emily Gerrie (Littleton, Colo.) had her shot turned aside in the final seconds as the game remained scoreless into the first intermission.
- The Panthers applied heavy pressure during another power play chance early in the second period but came up empty and UNE rode the momentum of the successful penalty kill into the game's first goal at the 7:30 mark.
- The tally ignited the home team, which doubled the margin just seconds after PSU killed off a penalty and the Nor'easters tallied a third goal just two minutes later for a 3-0 lead.
- PSU blasted multiple shots in the final minute of the period but were unable to get one past the Nor'easters defense.
- UNE put the game away with three more tallies in the third to account for the final score.
By the Numbers:
- Julian recorded 25 saves in the setback.
- Gerrie led the Panthers with four shots on goal, while Warnock, sophomore Sanna Augustsson (Sätila, Sweden) and senior Sophie Streed (Surry, N.H.) each put three shots on target.
- Sophomore Katie Porrello (Milford, Conn.) won 16-of-22 faceoffs to lead the Panthers.
- UNE held a narrow 62-59 edge in total shots.
- PSU finished 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Nor'easters converted 1-of-2 chances.
