Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Assistant Athletics Director, Athletics Communications

WH: UMass Boston holds off Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshman Sanna Augustsson (Satila, Sweden) scored and junior Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) made 21 saves, but the University of Massachusetts Boston slipped past Plymouth State University, 2-1, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's ice hockey action at Hanaway Rink on Friday night.

Both goaltenders were on top of their games and the PSU defense played inspired to keep the game scoreless into the third period. UMass Boston snapped the goalless streak less than 30 seconds into the third when a shot from the point was tipped past Julian. The visitors doubled the lead four minutes later, but PSU continued to battle.

Augustsson potted her second of the season on a low-angle wrist shot during a power play with 6:19 to play to cut the margin to 2-1 and Plymouth State went right back on the power play with a chance to pull even. The Beacons' penalty kill unit did its job, however, and the Panthers were held at bay the rest of the way.

Plymouth State moves to 3-18-1 and 2-12-1 in the NEHC. The Panthers need a win in Saturday's season finale, coupled with a Salem State loss in regulation at Southern Maine, to earn the final playoff spot. UMass Boston improves to 10-12-2 and 8-7-2 in conference action.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 1, UMass Boston 2
    • Plymouth State (3-18-1, 2-12-1 NEHC)
    • UMass Boston (10-12-2, 8-7-2 NEHC)
How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State applied early pressure right off the opening faceoff with chances for senior Taylor Thomas (Prior Lake, Minn.) and sophomore Emily DeSimone (Walpole, Mass.), but both shots were turned aside.
  • Freshman Katie Porrello (Milford, Conn.) stole the puck in the offensive zone but her drive from the slot was kicked away.
  • One of the Beacons' best opportunities of the opening period came when a UMass Boston player blocked a shot at the blueline and the puck rebounded through the neutral zone. Julian came way out of the crease to win the race to the loose puck, though, paddling it out of reach to keep the game scoreless.
  • Junior Katie Maloney (Calgary, Alberta) made a huge play to keep the Beacons off the board five minutes into the second. With Julian scrambling after making a save on a close-range shot, Maloney dove in front of the rebound bid to keep the puck out of the goal.
  • Junior Robyn Grant (Airdrie, Alberta) made another outstanding defensive play to keep the game scoreless through the second period. With UMass Boston on a power play, Julian made a save on a shot from the right faceoff dot. The puck trickled to the weakside, but Grant laid out to prevent the Beacons' skater from getting a shot off and the game went into the third period scoreless.
  • The Beacons broke through in the opening minute of the third when a shot from the blue line was redirected into the back of the net.
  • UMass Boston doubled the lead at the 4:34 mark of the period after a strong forecheck resulted in a turnover on the end boards. A quick pass to the slot and a one-timer to the top left corner made it a 2-0 game.
  • PSU had heavy zone pressure on back-to-back power plays just a minute later, but the Panthers were unable to break through.
  • Augustsson got the Panthers on the board when she fired a shot from the top of the right circle that got through the Beacons' goaltender to cut the deficit in half.
  • Plymouth State went back on the power play two minutes later but was unable to generate any momentum and the Beacons' held on for the narrow win.
By the Numbers:
  • Augustsson's tally was her second of the season.
  • Julian finished with 21 saves, surpassing the 20-save threshold for the 16th time in 20 games.
  • Thomas led the Panthers with seven shots.
  • The Panthers' defense blocked 15 shots, led by junior Lauren McNeil (Ottawa, Ontario) who notched four.
  • PSU went 1-for-5 on the power play, while the Beacons were scoreless in four chances.
  • UMass Boston is unbeaten in its last six games against PSU (5-0-1).

Up Next:
  • Plymouth State wraps up the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 11) with a Senior Day contest against Johnson & Wales. Puck drop is set for 2:00 p.m.
