ATTLEBORO, Mass. – Plymouth State University rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to force overtime, but Johnson & Wales was able to pot the game-winner 53 seconds into the extra frame to hold off the Panthers, 3-2, in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's ice hockey game at New England Sports Village on Friday evening.
The Wildcats scored twice in the opening frame but Plymouth State continued to battle and senior
Sophie Streed (Surry, N.H.) broke the ice at the 5:31 mark of the second to cut the deficit to 2-1. Junior
Libby Carter (Franklin, Mass.) evened the score midway through the third when she redirected a shot past the goaltender.
JWU skated down the left side and past the defense early in the extra session before flipping a pass to a skater alone in the slot for the game-winner.
Plymouth State dips to 3-11-0 (3-6-0 NEHC), while the Wildcats improve to 3-12-0 and 2-7-0 in league play.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 2, Johnson & Wales 3 (OT)
- Plymouth State (3-11-0, 3-6-0 NEHC)
- Johnson & Wales (3-12-0, 2-7-0 NEHC)
How it Happened:
- Plymouth State went on the power play less than a minute into the game, but the Wildcats clogged the shooting lanes to keep the Panthers off the board.
- JWU got on the board with 4:40 left in the frame when the Wildcats' forecheck led to a turnover and quick shot that snuck through for a 1-0 lead.
- Sophomore Jacqueline Martin (Smithfield, R.I.) teed up a blast from the blue line with three minutes left, but her shot was kicked aside by the JWU goaltender.
- Senior Lauren McNeil (Ottawa, Ontario) made a nice play to keep the puck in the zone and Martin whipped another shot from the right side that made its way through traffic in front, but again the goalie was up to the task.
- The Wildcats doubled the lead in the final minute when a wrist shot from the left circle slipped through the pads to make it 2-0.
- Senior Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) made a pair of saves against the JWU power play in the opening minutes of the second to keep the deficit at two.
- Streed cut the deficit in half at the 5:31 mark of the second. Junior Emily DeSimone (Norwood, Mass.) skated into the corner before slipping a pass to Streed in the slot and she tucked a wrister inside the left post to make it 2-1.
- Julian made another key stop midway through the second during a breakaway. She poked the puck free with her stick, then dove forward to cover up and maintain the one-goal deficit.
- Sophomore Morgan Cunningham (Wrentham, Mass.) skated in alone with 3:34 left in the period, but a JWU defender recovered to pester her from behind and her shot was kicked away.
- The Panthers pulled even at the 11:02 mark of the third when Carter tipped in Martin's shot from the blue line.
- Both teams had chances in the final minutes but were unable to convert as the game went into overtime.
- The Wildcats converted the game-winner in the opening minute of the extra frame when a skater got by the defense on the left side and fed puck to an open player in the slot to end the game.
