WBB: Crompton reaches milestone, Panthers fall to USM

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women's basketball team fell to the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 53-43, in a Little East Conference (LEC) meeting at Foley Gymnasium on Wednesday evening.
 
Graduate student Lea Crompton (Dunbarton, N.H) became the 13th player in Plymouth State women's basketball history to score her 1,000th career point in a Panthers' uniform. Crompton recorded 882 points playing for Vermont State University Lyndon from 2018-2022, and with 4:39 left in the third quarter, she drove past three Huskies' defenders and laid a teardrop into the bottom of the net to seal her name in history.
 
Junior Bri Wilcox (Londonderry, N.H.) led Plymouth State in scoring on the evening with 13 points, while Crompton added nine. Senior Lauren Keller (Fort Morgan, Colo.) recorded eight points and was perfect from the floor in the losing effort for the Panthers.
 
Crompton is the first Plymouth State women's basketball player to reach 1,000 points in eight years.
 
Plymouth State falls to 7-8 (3-4 LEC), while the Huskies go to 8-9 (6-2 LEC).

Top Performers: How it Happened:
  • The Panthers opened the contest knocking down the first two baskets to take a 5-0 early lead.
  • USM recorded the final four points of the first to take its first lead of the contest, 10-9, after one.
  • The teams were knotted at 14-a-piece with 5:44 on the clock in the second quarter.
  • The Huskies closed out the half on a 7-2 run to take a six-point halftime lead (28-22).
  • PSU were held without a field goal until Crompton's layup with 4:39 on the clock in the third, as the Huskies began to pull away 38-26.
  • The Panthers were invigorated, closing out the third quarter on an 11-3 run to close the gap to four points (41-37) with ten minutes left to play.
  • USM kept a two-possession advantage, 47-42, midway through the final quarter.
  • The Panthers continued to run with the Huskies but were unable to re-capture the lead as USM closed the game out at the free throw line for the victory.
By the Numbers:
  • The Panthers shot 5-of-16 from three-point land (31.3%) and 16-of-20 from the free throw line (80.0%).
  • Each team brought down 38 rebounds, with the Huskies taking the edge on the offensive boards, 12-10.
  • Bench points were in USM's favor, 12-7.
  • Points off turnovers went to the Panthers, 18-16.
  • Crompton became PSU's first 1,000-point scorer since DeAsia "Ace" Lawrence scored 1,114 career points from 2013-17.
