PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior
Ty Miller (Groton, Conn.) and junior
Chase Anestis (Belmont, N.H.) went undefeated on the day to lead the Plymouth State University wrestling squad at the NEWA Dual Meet Championships hosted by Johnson & Wales University at Wildcat Center on Sunday.
The 16-team tournament featured several nationally ranked programs, including the Panthers' first round matchup in #7 Vermont State University Castleton, as well as #6 Johnson & Wales, #13 Coast Guard and #23 Springfield.
PSU dropped its opening round matchup to the Spartans, 50-4, who marched through the championship bracket and into the third-place match. Anestis was responsible for the Panthers' lone points with a 13-2 major decision win over his opponent at 174 pounds.
Plymouth State followed with a 45-11 setback to a tough Southern Maine team. Anestis moved to 2-0 on the day with a decisive 15-0 technical fall win, while senior
Jack Carrozzi (Bedford, N.H.) added a quick pin over his opponent at 157 pounds to account for the remainder of PSU's points.
The Panthers' third round matchup came against Rhode Island College, a 46-7 setback. In his first competition of the day, Miller cruised to a 14-1 major decision win at 174 pounds, while junior
Colin Hile (Walpole, Mass.) added an 8-3 win by decision at 184 pounds. Junior
Nick Antonucci (Windham, N.H.) put up a fight at 149 pounds, before falling in a 15-6 major decision.
PSU wrapped up the day with a 37-18 loss to Bridgewater State. The Bears picked up a fall, technical fall, and forfeit win to race out to a 17-0 lead. Junior
Damari Goldsmith-Greene (Whitman, Mass.) battled at 149 pounds, but ultimately fell by a narrow 4-0 decision to make it 20-0. The Panthers rallied, though, as Carrozzi won by fall at 157 and sophomore
Ricky Perez (Londonderry, N.H.) followed suit with a pin at 165 pounds. Miller cut the deficit to 20-18 with his win by fall at 174, but Bridgewater State won the final three weight classes to hold on for the win.
Plymouth State returns to The Ocean State next Saturday (Jan. 27) for a quad meet with Bridgewater State, Maine Maritime, and host Roger Williams.
