WH: Panthers nipped by Keene State in OT

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Emily Gerrie (Littleton, Colo.) potted the game-tying goal with just 25.4 seconds remaining in regulation, but Keene State College snuck past Plymouth State University in overtime, 3-2, in a non-conference women's hockey game at Hanaway Rink on Saturday afternoon.

After a scoreless first period, the teams went back-and-forth trading goals right up to the end. Keene State scored the program's first ever goal on a power play late in the second period, but junior Jacqueline Martin (Smithfield, R.I.) answered back with a power play tally of her own two minutes into the third.

After the Owls retook the lead with yet another power play goal with 7:16 left to play, Plymouth State applied pressure looking for the equalizer. PSU pulled its goalie for the extra skater in the final minute, and Gerrie rifled a wrister to the top right corner with just 25.4 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

PSU had a prime chance in the extra frame during a 2-on-1 breakaway, but the Panthers came up empty and KSC took advantage. With just over two minutes left in overtime, the Owls knocked home a rebound in heavy traffic to split the weekend series.

Plymouth State moves to 1-1-0, while the Owls also finish the day at 1-1-0.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 2, Keene State 3 (OT)
    • Plymouth State (1-1-0)
    • Keene State (1-1-0)
How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State had an early chance to get on the board after a pair of Owls' penalties gave PSU a 5-on-3, but Keene State successfully killed off both to keep the game scoreless.
  • Junior Morgan Cunningham (Wrentham, Mass.) skated into the zone for a short-handed bid with just under seven minutes remaining in the first, but her shot to the near side was just off target.
  • Junior Caeli Reed (Norwood, Mass.) made a cross-ice pass to sophomore Emma Lemery (Queensbury, N.Y.), who was alone at the left faceoff dot, but the KSC goalie went post-to-post to deny her bid to the top left corner.
  • The Owls skated in on a 2-on-1 early in the middle stanza, but sophomore Teagan Wilson (Salisbury, Mass.) calmly paddled the shot aside.
  • The middle part of the period featured back-and-forth action as both teams went up and down the ice.
  • Keene State got on the board late in the frame with the program's first ever goal, a power play strike with just 1:12 left in the period, to take the 1-0 lead.
  • The Panthers answered right back with a power play goal of their own just two minutes into the third. Martin whipped a wrist shot from just inside the blue line over the shoulder of the KSC goalie to the top left corner to square the game at 1-1.
  • The Owls retook the lead, 2-1, with another power play goal at the 12:44 mark of the period when a puck dumped in from the blue line snuck into the top corner.
  • PSU caught the Owls on a change with four minutes to play but a bid by senior Emily DeSimone (Norwood, Mass.) was kicked aside.
  • Plymouth State pulled the goalie with 37 seconds remaining and junior Katie Porrello (Milford, Conn.) found Gerrie at the edge of the right circle. Gerrie's snipe found the top right corner to square the game at 2-2.
  • PSU had a 2-on-1 breakout during the three-on-three overtime session, but the Keene State defender blocked the shot.
  • The Owls countered. Wilson made an initial stop on a close-range shot, but the rebound snuck out of her reach and with a scrum of players in front of the net, a KSC skater got just enough on the shot to dribble through traffic and over the line for the game winner.
By the Numbers:
  • Gerrie finished with a goal and an assist for the Panthers, while Martin potted her first of the year.
  • Porrello and freshman Gracie Menicci (Pepperell, Mass.) added assists.
  • Wilson finished with 19 saves.
  • PSU finished 1-for-6 on the power play, while the Owls converted two of five chances.
  • The Panthers held a narrow 23-22 edge in shots.
Up Next:
  • PSU visits New England College on Tuesday (Nov. 5) for a 7:00 p.m. game.
