20240209 - WH vs Elmira

Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Assistant Athletics Director, Athletics Communications

WH: Elmira pulls away late to top Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Amelia Julian (Apple Valley, Minn.) made 38 saves and Plymouth State University limited Elmira College's offense through the first two periods, but the Soaring Eagles used a three-goal third period to fend off Plymouth State University, 6-0, in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink on Friday evening.

Plymouth State went toe-to-toe with the visitors through the opening period, controlling play for a six-minute stretch to start the game. PSU had several scoring chances early on, but the puck didn't bounce the Panthers' way.

Julian and Plymouth State's defense limited Elmira's opportunities, though the visitors were able to convert a rebound goal midway through the frame to start the scoring.

Elmira added a pair of second period tallies before putting the game out of reach with three in the final 20 minutes.

Plymouth State slips to 6-18-0 (6-11-0 NEHC), while Elmira, which is receiving votes in this week's USCHO.com national poll, jumps to 17-6-1 (14-2-1 NEHC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 0, Elmira 6
    • Plymouth State (6-18-0, 6-11-0 NEHC)
    • Elmira (17-6-1, 14-2-1 NEHC)
How it Happened:
  • Freshman Emily Gerrie (Littleton, Colo.) used a burst of speed to get up the right side before putting on the brakes at the circle midway through the first. She hit senior Katie Maloney (Calgary, Alberta) in the high slot, but Maloney's slapshot was blocked.
  • Elmira went ahead at the 12:08 mark of the period. Julian kicked aside a shot from the low slot, but the puck deflected to an Elmira skater who converted the low angle shot for the lead.
  • Senior Robyn Grant (Airdrie, Alberta) was alone on the near side for a rebound chance during a PSU power play in the final minutes of the frame, but the puck bounced out of her reach and the score remained 1-0 heading into intermission.
  • Senior Sophie Streed (Surry, N.H.) nearly had the equalizer as the wraparound power play continued into the first minute of the second. Junior Emily DeSimone (Norwood, Mass.) slid a pass through the crease to Streed on the far post but she was unable to connect.
  • Plymouth State continued to pressure the Soaring Eagles with steady zone pressure as junior Emily Biggin (Didsbury, Alberta) and senior Marissa Pickman (Bradford, N.H.) had close range shots blocked down by the defense.
  • Elmira used an odd man rush to double the lead at the 8:06 mark, then pushed the margin to 3-0 after hitting the trailer during a 1-on-1 breakaway with 5:26 left in the period.
  • Gerrie skated up the right side and deked around a defender with a minute remaining but her wrister sailed just wide of the near side post.
  • The visitors put the game away with three goals in the first 7:02 of the final period.
  • Plymouth State battled right to the end and junior Libby Carter (Franklin, Mass.) had PSU's best scoring chance in the frame when she blasted a shot from the right circle that rang the far post. The puck deflected off the back of goalie's leg, but Elmira was able to keep it from crossing the goal line.
By the Numbers:
  • Julian surpassed the 30-save threshold for the 11th time this season.
  • Elmira held a 44-12 advantage in shots.
  • Plymouth State didn't commit a single penalty in the contest.
  • The Panthers were 0-for-3 on the power play.
  • The two teams evenly split 46 faceoffs.
  • PSU falls to 0-5 in the head-to-head matchup.

Up Next:
  • Plymouth State hosts William Smith in the regular season finale on Saturday (Feb. 10). PSU will honor its senior class during a Senior Day ceremony prior to the 2:00 p.m. puck drop.
