SB: Panthers drop two to Bowdoin, Trinity

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Plymouth State University had the tying run on third base in its final at bat, but Trinity College was able to hold on for a 3-2 win in the Panthers second of two games at THE Spring Games at Fortune Road Athletic Complex on Tuesday.
 
Trinity scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but the Panthers tried to rally late. Freshman Avery Couch (Fort Worth, Texas) singled in a run in the sixth and sophomore Emily Bessette (Cranston, R.I.) made it a one-run game with a one-out, RBI double in the seventh. Bessette moved up to third on a ground out, but was stranded there.
 
Bowdoin overpowered PSU in the day's first game, riding a five-run second inning to an 11-0 win.
 
Plymouth State dips to 4-5, while Bowdoin goes to 1-0 and Trinity evens out a 3-3.

How it Happened (Bowdoin):
  • The Polar Bears scored twice in the first and added five more in the second to take a quick 7-0 lead.
  • Freshman Lauren Laudani (Londonderry, N.H.) poked a one-out single in the second but was stranded at first.
  • Bowdoin tacked on three more runs in the third to extend the margin to 10-0.
  • The Polar Bears added one in the fifth and PSU went down in order in the bottom of the frame.
By the Numbers (Bowdoin):
  • Laudani had PSU's lone hit.
  • Senior Alyssa Wilson (Bradford, Mass.) went the first 1.2 innings allowing three earned runs.
  • Laudani pitched 2.1 innings in relief, recording a strikeout and surrendering one earned run, while sophomore Celeste Fuccillo (Everett, Mass.) pitched the fifth.
 
How it Happened (Trinity):
  • Neither team had a baserunner over the first two innings.
  • Bessette worked a walk to start the third but was wiped out on a double play.
  • Trinity came back to scratch a run across in the bottom of the frame.
  • The Bantams added a single run in the fourth, and a solo home run in the fifth made it a 3-0 game.
  • Junior Kaity Montelongo (South Paris, Maine) reached on an error to start the sixth. She stole second and came around to score a Couch's base hit. Junior Mia Ly (Lowell, Mass.) followed with a base hit as the Panthers threatened for more, but a double play ended the rally.
  • Freshman Kiera Larson (Glenwood Springs, Colo.) walked with one down in the seventh and pinch runner Cayleigh Adams (Hampton, N.H.) came all the way around on Bessette's double to cut the lead to 3-2. She moved to third on a ground out but was stranded there to end the game.
By the Numbers (Trinity):
  • Bessette had the Panthers' lone extra base hit, while sophomore Kenzie Bessette (Cranston, R.I.), Couch and Ly all singled.
  • Sophomore Abbey Nezuch (Marlborough, Mass.) went the distance, allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out one.
  • The teams last met in 2016, with PSU taking a 9-1 win. Trinity has won seven of the 11 meetings.
 
Up Next:
  • The Panthers are off tomorrow before a busy Thursday (Mar. 14). The Panthers face Albertus Magnus and Arcadia in Kissimmee, Fla. in the morning, then travel to Clermont to square off against #8 Bethel University at 6:30 p.m.
