WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior
Chase Anestis (Belmont, N.H.) earned a sudden victory win to advance to day two of the 2024 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship at WPI on Saturday.
After suffering a defeat in his opening bout, Anestis rallied with a win by fall before squaring off against the third seed in his 174-pound bracket. The following bout went into sudden victory deadlocked at 2-2, until Anestis secured the win with a takedown.
Anestis becomes the first PSU wrestler to advance to day two of the tournament since
Dylan da Silva in 2018-19.
The Basics:
- NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship – 18th of 20 Teams
How it Happened:
- Anestis came out on the wrong end of a 9-1 major decision in his opening bout but responded with a win by fall in 1:08 to extend his tournament. Paired up against the third seed in the weight class, Anestis used a take down during the first sudden victory period to secure a 5-2 win and move on to day two.
- Senior Jack Carrozzi (Bedford, N.H.) nearly joined Anestis after an outstanding day at 157 pounds. He opened the tournament with a win by fall, needing just 54 seconds to secure an opening round fall. After dropping a technical fall in his second bout, Carrozzi followed with another win by fall, this time in 5:47, before securing a forfeit. His run ended in the next round, though, in a 9-0 major decision setback.
- Freshman Cam McMahon (East Hampstead, N.H.), sophomores Nick Savariego (Hillsdale, N.J.) and Michael Moussa (Tucson, Ariz.), juniors Nick Antonucci (Windham, N.H.) and Carlos Barrios (Staten Island, N.Y.) and senior Ty Miller (Groton, Conn.) also competed for the Panthers.
- Miller ended his season with an impressive 22-13 record, leading the team in wins and pins (nine).
