WTEN: Cardoso, Orama lead Panthers over Thomas

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Elena Cardoso (Hudson, Mass.) and sophomore Sofia Orama (Marlborough, Conn.) were dominant in singles play, dropping just one game apiece, as Plymouth State University picked up its first win of the season, 7-2, over Thomas College in a non-conference women's tennis match at the Holderness School Courts on Thursday afternoon.
 
The Panthers swept doubles play, with Cardoso and junior Alyssa Craigie (Gilford, N.H.) teaming up for an overpowering 8-0 win at No. 2, while Cardoso took No. 4 singles (6-1, 6-0) and Orama cruising at No. 6 (6-0, 6-1).
 
PSU also picked up straight sets wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
 
Plymouth State picks up its first win of the season to move to 1-3, while the Terriers even out at 2-2.

How it Happened:
  • Plymouth State came out firing as Orama and sophomore Maddie Lorenz (Jefferson, N.H.) teamed up for a quick 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.
  • Craigie and Cardoso blanked their opposition at No. 2 pairs, while sophomore Chloe Ahern (Middleton, Mass.) and senior Tessa LaBarre (North Smithfield, R.I.) capped off the impressive doubles performance with an 8-4 win at No. 1.
  • Orama pushed the lead to 4-0 after dropping just one game at No. 6 singles and Ahern made quick work of her opponent at No. 1 (6-4, 6-2) to secure the team win.
  • Cardoso followed with her overwhelming win at No. 4 and LaBarre rolled to a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2.
  • The Terriers got on the board with a win at No. 3, and Thomas secured the final point as Lorenz came up just short (5-7, 6-4, 8-10) in a battle at No. 5.
By the Numbers:
  • With her win, Cardoso moved into the top ten in career singles wins. She is tied for 10th with 24 victories.
  • LaBarre is just behind her, sporting a 23-19 career mark.
  • Cardoso is also tied for eighth in career doubles wins after winning her 23rd contest today.
  • This was the first ever meeting between the two programs.
