Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Christopher J. Kilmer, Asst. Director of Communications for Athletics

WH: Maloney’s first goal lifts Panthers over MCLA

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior Katie Maloney (Calgary, Alberta) scored her first career goal midway through the first period to help lift Plymouth State University to a 2-1 win over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's ice hockey game at Hanaway Rink on Friday night.

Classmate Emily DeSimone (Norwood, Mass.) opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game and Maloney doubled the margin eight minutes later. The Trailblazers capitalized on a power play chance late in the frame to make it 2-1 after one.

Plymouth State controlled play the remainder of the game, including a dominant third period in which the Panthers outshot MCLA by a 17-0 margin, but neither side was able to push another past the opposing goaltender.

PSU jumps to 7-4-0 and stays unbeaten in the MASCAC (4-0-0), while MCLA moves to 7-7-0 and 1-4-0 in conference play.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 2, MCLA 1
    • Plymouth State (7-4-0, 4-0-0 MASCAC)
    • MCLA (7-7-0, 1-4-0 MASCAC)
How it Happened:
  • The Panthers had an early chance four minutes into the first when senior Libby Carter (Franklin, Mass.) and sophomore Laura Castronova (Hauppauge, N.Y.) skated in during a 2-on-1, but the MCLA goaltender made a pair of outstanding saves.
  • PSU got on the board 1:27 later when DeSimone snagged a loose puck in the slot and banged it home for the 1-0 lead.
  • Maloney doubled the lead with seven minutes left in the frame when her slapshot from just inside the blue line made its way through traffic and into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
  • MCLA cut into the deficit with a power play goal in the final minute to make it 2-1 heading into the first intermission.
  • Neither team was able to get much going through the first half of the second period. Plymouth State built some momentum during the second half of a power play chance, firing three quick shots in a 15-second span, but the Trailblazers were able to kill off the penalty.
  • After a successful penalty kill of its own, PSU went back on the skater advantage late in the stanza. A redirect by Castronova looked headed for the goal, but the MCLA goalie was just able to close the five-hole as the score remained 2-1 into the third period.
  • MCLA's goaltender made another outstanding stop, going post-to-post to glove down DeSimone's rebound bid five minutes into the third.
  • PSU dominated play in the final stanza, keeping the puck in the offensive zone for the majority of the frame and outshooting the Trailblazers, 17-0, to preserve the 2-1 victory.
By the Numbers:
  • DeSimone's goal was her fourth of the season and 11th of her career.
  • Maloney's first career goal proved to be the game-winner.
  • Sophomores Jamie Steinmetz (Madison, Wis.) and Lilli Warnock (Bernardsville, N.J.), junior Katie Porrello (Milford, Conn.) and senior Alanna Hoag (Clinton, Mass.) all registered assists.
  • PSU finished 0-for-4 on the power play, while MCLA went 1-for-3.
  • Plymouth State finished with a 43-6 advantage in shots and won 32-of-45 faceoffs.
  • DeSimone went 14-3 in the circle and junior Morgan Cunningham (Wrentham, Mass.) won 10-of-15 draws.
  • All four of the Panthers' MASCAC wins have been by a single goal.
  • Plymouth State won the only other meeting between the two teams, a 3-2 decision in North Adams, Mass. last month.
Up Next:
  • The Panthers head to Biddeford, Maine for a date with the University of New England tomorrow (Jan. 11) at 5:00 p.m.
