WH: Rivier returns favor, shuts out Panthers

NASHUA, N.H. – Rivier University used a pair of second period power play goals and strong goaltending to fend off Plymouth State University, 3-0, in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's ice hockey game at Conway Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Less than 24 hours after PSU blanked the Raiders at home, the Raiders returned the favor to earn a split of the weekend series. Plymouth State had ample opportunities, with five power plays, including 48 seconds of a two-skater advantage, but Rivier's goalie was up to the task finishing with 44 saves.

Plymouth State has its three-game winning streak snapped to dip to 10-6-1 and suffers its first league loss of the year (6-1-1 MASCAC), while Rivier evens out at 8-8-0 and goes to 5-2-0 in conference action.

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 0, Rivier 3
    • Plymouth State (10-6-1, 6-1-1 MASCAC)
    • Rivier (8-8-0, 5-2-0 MASCAC)
How it Happened:
  • The ice was tilted in Plymouth State's favor for most of the first period, but the Panthers were unable to slip the puck past the Rivier goaltender.
  • The Raiders applied some pressure during a power play in the final stages of the period, but sophomore Teagan Wilson (Salisbury, Mass.) made three saves and PSU blocked three shots as the game remained scoreless into the first intermission.
  • Rivier jumped into the lead just 2:51 into the second during another power play when a shot from the right circle ricocheted off a stick and into the goal.
  • The hosts doubled the lead with another power play strike just under five minutes later.
  • Senior Emily Biggin (Didsbury, Alberta) intercepted a pass in the defensive end and outskated the Raiders for a breakaway chance with five minutes left in the period, but the Rivier goaltender got just enough glove on Biggin's wrist shot to keep the puck out of the net.
  • PSU had a golden chance to get back into the game as the Panthers went on overlapping power plays with 3:07 left in the frame, including 48 seconds of 5-on-3, but the hosts were able to kill off both penalties.
  • Plymouth State was unable to generate chances in the final stanza and Rivier capped the scoring with an insurance goal with just over a minute left on the clock.
By the Numbers:
  • Wilson posted 25 saves in the setback.
  • Sophomore Jamie Steinmetz (Madison, Wis.) fired a team-high eight shots, while junior Jacqueline Martin (Smithfield, R.I.) added seven.
  • The Raiders successfully clogged the shooting lanes for the second straight night, blocking 20 PSU shots a day after recording 17 blocks.
  • Senior Emily DeSimone (Norwood, Mass.) dominated the faceoff circle with 17 wins in 23 chances.
  • The Panthers held a 44-28 advantage in shots on goal and fired 24 shots in the middle period alone.
  • Special teams were the deciding factor, as Rivier finished 2-of-4 on the power play, while holding the Panthers scoreless in five chances.
  • Plymouth State was seeking to tie the program record with a fourth straight win.
  • PSU leads the all-time series by a 2-1 margin.

Up Next:
  • The Panthers head to Framingham State on Thursday (Jan. 30) for a league game against the Rams. Puck drop is set for 7:40 p.m.
