WRE: Anestis, Miller perfect at NEWA Dual Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior Chase Anestis (Belmont, N.H.) and graduate student Ty Miller (Groton, Conn.) combined to go 8-0 with five pins as the Plymouth State University wrestling team finished 16th at the NEWA Dual Meet Championships hosted by Johnson & Wales University on Sunday.

The 16-team tournament field featured several nationally ranked programs, including #4 Johnson & Wales, #6 VTSU Castleton, #15 Coast Guard and #21 Springfield.

First Round: Plymouth State 10, #6 VTSU Castleton 44
  • Anestis stopped a streak of Spartans' wins with a pin in 1:34 at 165 pounds, extending his recent stretch of outstanding wrestling.
  • Miller earned a decisive 14-3 major decision victory at 184 pounds to account for the remainder of the Panthers' points.

Second Round: Plymouth State 15, Trinity 36
  • Anestis was at it again against the Bantams, earning a win by fall in 2:20.
  • Miller followed suit, needing 1:34 to pin his opponent.
  • At heavyweight, senior Colin Hile (Walpole, Mass.) held on for a hard-fought, 5-4 decision to secure another three points for the Panthers. Hile trailed 3-1 entering the final period, but an escape and takedown allowed him to leapfrog into the lead as he held off his competition.

Third Round: Plymouth State 18, New England College 37
  • Anestis needed just one minute to secure his third straight pin of the day to get the Panthers on the scoreboard.
  • Miller improved to 3-0 on the day with a pin of his own in 2:58.
  • Hile added a forfeit victory to earn another six points for PSU.

Fourth Round: Plymouth State 10, Norwich 38
  • Anestis closed out his perfect day without surrendering a point in a 9-0 major decision win.
  • Miller picked up a forfeit win for PSU's remaining points.

The Panthers head back to Rhode Island again on Saturday (Feb. 1) for a quad meet with Bridgewater State, Maine Maritime and host Roger Williams.
