BANGOR, Maine – Seniors
Ellie Monahan (Watertown, Mass.) and
Katie Porrello (Milford, Conn.) each recorded a goal and an assist, while freshman
Cassidy Leger (Bellingham, Mass.) scored her first career goal, but Husson University held off a late rally to top Plymouth State University, 5-3, in non-conference field hockey action at the Winkin Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Husson controlled play early and took a 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the contest. The Eagles added another early in the second quarter to double the lead, but halfway through the second, Leger deposited her first collegiate goal to cut the margin to 2-1 at the half.
The hosts rattled off three straight goals in a five-minute span to take a commanding 5-1 lead into the final frame. The Panthers' offense clawed back for a late rally as Porrello was able to fire one into the cage for her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Late in the quarter, Monahan got free and ripped one past the Husson goalkeeper to account for the final score.
Plymouth State dips to 4-7, while the Eagles improve to 4-6.

How it Happened:
- Husson took the early 1-0 lead just over three minutes into the contest.
- The hosts added a second goal early in the second to make it 2-0.
- PSU answered back with Leger's first career goal and the score remained 2-1 at the half.
- The Eagles took control in the third, scoring three goals in a matter of five minutes to build a 5-1 lead into the fourth.
- PSU's offense rallied late as Porrello slammed home her team-leading fifth goal of the season and Monahan fired one past the Husson goalie late to make it 5-3.
- Husson was able to hold on the rest of the way for the win.
By the Numbers:
- Freshman Natalie Merrick (East Longmeadow, Mass.) made 15 saves in the setback.
- Porrello scored once and added an assist. She leads the team in both categories.
- Leger's goal was the first of her career.
- Monahan scored a goal and added an assist for her fourth multi-point game of the season.
- The contest was just the fourth meeting between the two programs. Plymouth State earned a home win last season, but the Eagles hold a 3-1 advantage overall.
