PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman
Sya McKay (Somersworth, N.H.) had an overpowering week at the net for the Plymouth State University women's volleyball team last week. On Monday, her efforts were rewarded as the Little East Conference (LEC) announced its weekly awards winners.
McKay was honored as the LEC Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week after helping the Panthers to a perfect 4-0 week, dropping just one set in the process.
McKay averaged 2.46 kills per set with a .377 attack percentage, adding 11 total blocks, 18 digs, and seven aces as the Panthers swept Norwich University, New England College, and Worcester State University, before rallying past Connecticut College, 3-1.
McKay pounded six kills on just eight attempts (.750) with three blocks, seven digs, and five aces in Tuesday's sweep of the Cadets, then registered nine kills, three blocks, and three digs as PSU cruised past NEC in Thursday's home opener.
On Saturday, McKay posted seven kills (.400), two blocks, five digs, and an ace to blank Worcester State, before closing out the week with 10 kills (.360), three blocks, three digs, and an ace in the four-set win over the Camels.
McKay's name appears among the league leaders in several categories – first in solo blocks (17), second in total blocks (29), fourth in blocks per set (0.83), fifth in points (103), 10th in points per set (3.22), and 11th in hitting percentage (.247).
The Panthers are home for a pair of non-conference matches this week. Saint Joseph's College of Maine visits Foley Gymnasium on Tuesday (Sept. 16) for a 5:00 p.m. contest, before Bridgewater State travels north on Saturday (Sept. 20) for a noon matchup.
