WH: Panthers tripped up by Keene State despite significant shot advantage

KEENE, N.H. – Freshman Olivia Robbins (Poolesville, Md.) notched her second goal in the last three games, but Keene State College earned a split of the weekend series with a 4-1 win over Plymouth State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's ice hockey contest at Keene Ice on Saturday afternoon.

The Owls got on the board early in the first period. Despite holding a significant shot advantage, Plymouth State fell behind 3-0 after the hosts scored twice in the first five minutes of the third period. Robbins broke through with 1:51 remaining, but Keene State added an empty-net power-play goal in the final 40 seconds to account for the final score.

Plymouth State slips to 5-7-0 (1-7-0 LEC), while Keene State goes to 6-8-0 (3-5-0 LEC).

The Basics:
  • Plymouth State 1, Keene State 4
    • Plymouth State (5-7-0, 1-7-0 LEC)
    • Keene State (6-8-0, 3-5-0 LEC)
How it Happened:
  • Keene State opened the scoring 4:02 into the game with a wrist shot from the low slot.
  • The Panthers had a pair of power play chances midway through the frame, including 16 seconds of 5-on-3, but were unable to cash in.
  • PSU controlled the middle stanza, outshooting the Owls 15-4 and going on the power play four times, but the Keene State goalie held strong as the score remained 1-0 entering the third period.
  • The Owls got a fortunate bounce when a centering pass deflected off a skate and landed on the stick of a skater alone on the far post to make it 2-0 just 1:30 into the third period.
  • Keene State extended the lead to 3-0 three minutes later on a shot from the point.
  • Robbins took a centering feed from junior Grace Bonnell (Madison, Wis.) and snapped a quick shot to the back of the net to get the Panthers on the board with an extra skater and 1:51 left to play.
  • KSC sealed the win with an empty-net tally during a power play in the final minute.
By the Numbers:
  • Robbins has goals in two of the last three games and recorded a point in three straight contests.
  • Bonnell, who scored the game-winner last night, registered an assist and has six points over the last four games.
  • Freshman Lisi Palmer (Brunswick, Maine) also tallied an assist – her fourth straight game with a point and third assist of the weekend.
  • Junior Karlee Lehner (Prince Albert, Saskatchewan) logged 17 saves in the setback.

  • The Panthers were held scoreless in seven power play chances. Keene State finished 1-for-2.
  • The teams have split six all-time meetings.
