PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Senior
Katie Porrello (Milford, Conn.) took sole possession of the all-time career assists record as Plymouth State University topped the University of Massachusetts Boston, 4-1, in the first game of a key Little East Conference (LEC) weekend series at Hanaway Rink on Friday afternoon.
Senior
Morgan Cunningham (Wrentham, Mass.) gave the Panthers a first-period lead and freshman
Sofia Cuozzo (Guilford, Conn.) doubled the margin early in the second. Plymouth State appeared to extend the lead to 3-0 late in the frame, but the referees waived off the goal and UMass Boston capitalized, scoring less than a minute later to pull within 2-1.
Freshman
Jorja Moore (Penticton, British Columbia) made several key saves in the third period and PSU killed off a penalty late in the frame, before the Panthers sealed the win with late goals from junior
Laura Castronova (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and freshman
Lisi Palmer (Brunswick, Maine) to seal the important win.
Porrello, who registered the assist on Palmer's tally, took sole possession of the program record for career assists with her 30th. She also ranks second in career points (47).
Plymouth State improves to 8-8-0 (2-7-0 LEC), while the Beacons slip to 8-6-2 (4-4-1 LEC). The teams wrap up the series at Hanaway Rink on Saturday (Jan. 24) at 2 p.m.
The Basics:
- Plymouth State 4, UMass Boston 1
- Plymouth State (8-8-0, 2-7-0 LEC)
- UMass Boston (8-6-2, 4-4-1 LEC)
How it Happened:
- UMass Boston had a prime opportunity to take an early lead with a penalty shot just 3:35 into the contest, but Moore stuffed the bid to keep the game scoreless.
- Junior Juliet Rutigliano (Martinsville, N.J.) forced a turnover at the blue line and skated down the left side for a 3-on-2 break midway through the first. She sent the puck across the ice to senior Caeli Reed (Norwood, Mass.), who found Cunningham alone in the slot for the first-period lead.
- The Panthers extended the margin early in the second period when Cuozzo snagged a rebound and went top shelf to make it 2-0.
- It looked like PSU had pushed the lead to 3-0 with just over four minutes left in the frame, but the officials waived off the goal and UMass Boston took advantage, scoring less than a minute later to pull within 2-1.
- Things went back-and-forth through much of the third period, with Moore making several key stops and PSU's penalty kill coming up big to preserve the one-goal lead.
- Castronova gave the Panthers some breathing room when her wrister from the right circle snuck through the UMass Boston goalie to make it 3-1 with 3:30 remaining.
- Palmer sealed the win less than a minute later, stuffing in a rebound to account for the final score.
By the Numbers:
- Cunningham's tally was her first of the year.
- Castronova leads the team with six goals and is second all-time with 23 career markers.
- Moore finished with 25 saves to pick up the win.
- Both teams went 0-for-2 on the power play.
- Plymouth State held a narrow 30-26 shot advantage.
- UMass Boston had won six of the previous seven meetings, though five of the contests were decided by just one goal.
Up Next:
