GORHAM, Maine - Sophomore Jessica Knight (Alfred,
Maine) scored three goals, including two short handed, to lead the
University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 5-0 victory over the
Plymouth State University Panthers in an Eastern College Athletic
Conference (ECAC) Women's East hockey game Friday afternoon at the
USM Ice Arena.
The win was the Huskies' first since beating Norwich University on
January 11, and snapped a seven-game (0-6-1) winless stretch.
The Huskies improve to 5-14-1 overall and 5-8-1 in league
play. The Panthers, competing in their first season in the
ECAC Women's East set-up, remain winless for the season at 0-15-1
overall and 0-13-1 in the league.
Knight put the Huskies on the board with a power-play goal, set up
by seniors Katie Quartuccio (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and Jenna Stanley
(Enosburg Falls, Vt.), at 5:29 of the first period. Knight
scored her first short-handed tally, unassisted, at 6:39 of the
middle period. She completed her hat trick with another
short-handed goal at 5:19 of the final period. Knight is the
first USM player to score two short-handed goals in the same game,
and her three short-handed markers this season is also a school
record.
Senior Amy McNally (East Waterboro, Maine) followed up Knight's
first period goal with her fifth goal of the season 54 seconds
later. Freshman Alyssa Gibson (Hingham, Mass.) made it 3-0 at
16:28. The Huskies out shot the Panthers 15-1 in the opening
20 minutes. Freshman Amanda Shorey (Ayer, Mass.) picked up an
assist on both goals.
Freshman goalie Jackie Zarb (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) picked up
her third win, and second shutout, of the season making seven saves
for Southern Maine. Junior Lindsay DeLorie
(Holliston, Mass.) made 28 stops for Plymouth State.
Southern Maine will look to win back-to-back games for the first
time this season when it hosts Castleton State College Saturday
afternoon (1:00 p.m.). Plymouth State travels to in-state
rival New England College on Saturday (1:00 p.m.)
