NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The
Plymouth State University softball team registered 19 runs on 29
hits Saturday afternoon, sweeping a doubleheader from the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 8-0 and 11-3, in the Little
East Conference opener for both schools at the UMD Athletic
Complex.
The Panthers extended their winning streak to 10 games and improved
to 10-2 overall, while the Corsairs are still looking for their
first win of the season (0-10).
Sophomore Kat Roland (Norton, Mass./Fontbonne
Academy) pitched a four-hit shutout for PSU in the opener, walking
none and striking out 10. Sophomore Kay LaBrie
(Somersworth, N.H.) hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and
freshman Kortney Nedeau (Kennebunk, Maine) and
senior Danielle Normand (Rumford, R.I.) also drove
in two runs each for the Panthers, Nedeau going 3-for-3.
Senior Lori Pettengill (Holderness, N.H.)
also had two hits, including a triple. It was the third
shutout for Roland, who improved to 4-0 with the victory.
Freshman Andrea Pydynkowski (Danvers, Mass.) and
sophomore Jenna George (Cumberland, R.I.) each
singled in runs in a five-run first inning of the nightcap, and PSU
led 9-2 after three innings. Pydynkowski drove in four runs in the
game and George knocked in two, while freshman Melissa
Caiazzo (Portland, Maine) and LaBrie had three hits
apiece. Sophomore Alyssa Marini (Kingston, N.H.)
also had two hits and scored two runs. Junior
Courtney MacFarland (Derry, N.H.) pitched the
first five innings and earned the win for PSU, improving to 4-1.
The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Roger Williams
Monday evening, while the Panthers will visit Fitchburg State on
Wednesday.
