NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team raced
to a 7-2 halftime lead Saturday afternoon and went on to defeat
visiting Plymouth State University, 13-6, in a Little East
Conference match.
The Corsairs scored three times in a span of two minutes and 13
seconds in the first quarter, and then scored the first four goals
of the second quarter to claim a 7-1 advantage with 7:19 left in
the first half. PSU pulled to within three goals (8-5) midway
through the third quarter, but UMD scored five of the game's final
six goals to capture the victory.
Sophomore Andrew Foster (Newbury, Mass.) put the Corsairs on the
board early in the first quarter, and junior Matt Leary
(Framingham, Mass.) scored two goals within 1:01 to make it 3-0.
Sophomore Mike Lee (Foxboro, Mass.), freshman Josh Arsenault
(Revere, Mass.), junior Steve Colella (Wakefield, Mass.) and
freshman Steve Espinola (Groton, Mass.) scored in the second
quarter for UMD, while sophomore Brian Giroux
(Wolfeboro Falls, N.H.) scored both Panther goals in the first
half.
After Arsenault made it 8-2 by scoring for UMD early in the third
quarter, PSU came back with three consecutive goals by senior
Mike Russell (Concord, N.H.) and sophomores
Matt Johansmeyer (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) and
sophomore Tim Hadley (New London, N.H./Kearsarge)
to make it 8-5. But freshman Brian Flanagan (Walpole, Mass.) and
Lee scored before the end of the third quarter to increase the
Corsairs' advantage to 10-5 entering the fourth quarter.
Johansmeyer added his second of the game to start the final period,
but the Corsairs scored the final three goals of the contest.
Leary and Arsenault led UMass Dartmouth with three goals apiece,
while Lee added two. Freshman Tim Walsh (Medford, Mass.)
contributed four assists. Senior Adam
Krinsky (Concord, N.H.) finished with three assists for
the Panthers.
The Corsairs out shot the Panthers, 44-26. Senior goalkeeper Steve
Chase (Boston, Mass.) made 14 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while
freshman goalies Billy Morgan (Winchester, Mass.)
and Kevin Hayes (Beverly, Mass.) combined to make
13 for PSU.
UMass Dartmouth, 10-2 overall and 3-2 in the Little East, returns
to action Wednesday when it hosts Mount Ida, while the Panthers,
7-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference, visit Castleton State for a
non-conference encounter on Tuesday (1:00 p.m.)
PSU has not played a home game yet this season. The Panthers
will finally play on home turf Thursday against New England College
(4:00 p.m.)
