MANSFIELD, Conn. - The Plymouth
State University softball team had its school-record 14 game
winning streak stopped Sunday, dropping a Little East Conference
doubleheader at Eastern Connecticut State University, 9-8 and 7-3,
at ECSU's Spector Field.
PSU had relied on strong pitching to run its winning streak to 14,
breaking the previous mark of 10 set in 2003, but Sunday was a day
for scoring runs. The two teams combined for 17 runs on 19
hits in the opener, and added 10 runs on 16 hits in the
nightcap. PSU finished the day with a 14-4 overall record and
2-2 LEC mark, while Eastern Conn. improved to 14-4 and 4-0.
Eastern Conn. jumped on PSU for four runs in the bottom of the
first inning in the opener, senior Krystle Denny (West Haven,
Conn.) delivering an RBI single and sophomore Kim Church
(Farmington, Conn.) smacking a three-run home run. The Panthers
answered with six runs in the top of the second inning, as freshman
Andrea Pydynkowski (Danvers, Mass.) and sophomore
Kay LaBrie (Somersworth, N.H.) each hit two-run
home runs and freshman Melissa Caiazzo (Portland,
Maine) added an RBI single.
LaBrie added an RBI double in the fourth inning and sophomore
Sammi Romano (Kingston, N.H.) chipped in with an
RBI single in the fifth as PSU extended its lead to 8-4, but
Eastern pulled out the win with five runs in the sixth
inning. Senior Kate Livingston (West Hartford, Conn.) and
junior Courtney Caswell (Wakefield, R.I.) hit RBI doubles, and
Denny hit a big two-run home run to key the winning rally.
The Warriors scored one run in the first inning of the nightcap,
and pulled away with three in the third and two more in the
fourth. PSU finally got on the board in the fifth inning on a
two-run double by senior Danielle Normand
(Rumford, R.I.). Freshman Laura Kaplan (Franklin,
N.H.) added another run for the Panthers in the sixth inning when
she doubled and later scored on an infield out. Freshman
Kortney Nedeau (Kennebunk, Maine) finished the
game with three hits for PSU.
